I want to become at least decent enough to be accepted on American Idol (just using that as an example), preferrably better than decent. As good as Carrie Underwood or similar to her. Please Help and No Rude Comments!

I would go and get a voice coach or sing in school choirs around the teacher.. it will build your voice slowly.... There is not really a song that is popular that can do this besides singing scales like do re mi or so on.... But you need someone around to tell you if your not hitting them correctly or you will never know.... and the can instruct you on what to do to make your voice stronger.. Also some people cant sing very high as an 1st soprano... do what your voice lets you and that way its clear and your voice doesn't sound strained and may crack.

the best way to become a truly good singer is to have a firm grounding in some form of classical training, as it will teach you to use your vocal chords properly, and will pretty much help you in every area you need to sing well (breathing, intonation, diction ect)
i would say the best song you could choose would be a study. not the best choice if you want to perform a song, but vocal studies are designed to help a singer improve in specific areas. seeing as you are looking to do pop, im guessing that you will want to be pretty good at your runs (think the very very last phrase of bootylicious sung by destinys child). a great study that will improve your flexibility is no. 21 by guiseppe concone.

You might not go far if you hate high notes. Here is a song that is really hard to sing, and if you learn to sing it and sing it at american idol, you would go to hollywood. Simon would even like it if you could do it.

Ya Ana, Ya Ana by Fairouz. I don't know her first name. You can find her on the internet. You also need to find her lyrics.

A vocal coach is definately in order.. they can lead you in the right direction... There is so much to this answer.. I would suggest finding a good vocal coach. Things to look for in a good vocal coach include doing a balanced selection of music, someone who uses warm ups, someone who is able to talk to you about good vocal health, someone who will allow you to come sit in on a lesson with one of her more advanced students (if he or she can get one to agree), and someone who sings for you OFTEN! Good luck :)
