teach him his left from his right. it can be done. since he knows shake, tell him to shake left and accept only the left paw. after he gets that tell him to shake right and accept only the right paw. when he gets that mix it up so he doesn't just alternate.

There are lots of things you can teach him to do. Some are:
Say his prayers (head bowed between paws which are on a chair or bed)
Spin (turn in a circle)
Back up (use the cue Beep! Beep! - cute)
Weave (figure 8 through your legs - more impressive when you are walking!)
Nod yes (use a hand signal instead of verbal cue so he can answer any question you want)
Shake no (ditto)
Speak
There are a number of books on trick-training. My favorite is The Trick is in the Training by Stephanie Taunton and Cheryl Smith.

i had a dog once that i taught him to fetch, but the cool part was, i did not have to say anything, i got it to were i would throw the ball, he would sit there and look at it, but would not move, once i snap my fingers he would take off after the ball, then i could hold out my hand, he would place it into my hand, then stat over, i did not have to say a word, he knew exactly what to do. people were amazed that he would do it without telling him, maybe you could have him sit, stand, crawl, and what ever else he does, by differant nosies, like when you tell him to sit, whisle once, when you still him to stay whitle twice, or even snap your fingers, just do the sound when you say the command, then soon he will just start doing it with the sound.

You might try teaching your dog to "touch a target". It's something we do in obedience competition class in preparation for competition training. We started out using a white lid to a butter dish and put bright yellow and blue tape on it in an "X". These are colors dogs can see. Then teach your dog to touch the target on cue. Start close and see how far away you can get from the target to send your dog out to touch it.
Another one you can try is to teach your dog sit or down on recall. When your dog is across the room from you and you call your dog to come, you give the command to sit or down... dog should stop in his tracks and go down immediately. Not always easy to train as the dog often wants to come to you to do it.
If you really enjoy teaching your dog new things, consider obedience (Rally-O is a little more relaxed than obedience and great for beginners) or agility training! Lots of great things to learn there and fun for both you and your dog. I'm in process of both of these right now and really enjoying the training and all that I am learning about it.

Trick training is a great way to bond with your dog!
Some useful tricks:
Teach him to find certain things and bring them to you, like your keys, your cell phone, your running shoes, and his favorite toy. The keys & cell phone trick can be very handy if you drop them outside or misplace them in your house. But you'll need to teach him to find them by scent, in different areas of the house and yard, for him to learn the command reliably and not just in the context of a certain location.
Teach him to pick up and bring you things when you point at them, or shine a laser pointer on them.
Teach him to pick up his toys and put them away in a box.
'Take a bow' is a cute trick.
There's a good book on dog tricks called 'Dog Tricks for Dummies' that you might like.

You can go on-line to look up new tricks or they have a lot of books at the library.... You can teach him to play dead, Dance by standing on his back legs and doing a circle while standing, or you can put a treat in your fist and give him the option to find it in your right or left hand.... Don't give it to him let him find it... there sense of smell is great he will find it.... and many more.... I would seriously suggest the books at the library.. they have some that are really cool.. its great to see a person committed to playing with there dog... GOOD Job and good luck..

I taught my little schnauzer this in about 2 hours and it is so cute. I say lay down and he does, then roll over and he does then pray for a cookie he does.
Thing is once you get your dogs attention and demonstrate, ROLL by rolling him over, PRAY put his head down on his paws.
You can teach from those basics, play dead, bang bang, hide your head. LOTS OF TRICKs. Sounds like this is a great companion. Good Luck and have fun.

We taught our little Cocker Spaniel to lay down. Then we would say "Poor Puppy!" and she would lay her little head down on her paws.
It was so cute because of her long floppy ears & her big eyes looking up at us! She looked quite adorable & pathetic.
You can easily teach him to put his head down since he already knows how to lay down. Just hold the little treat on the floor in front of him, gently push his head down to the floor - the treat will help with this. Say "Poor Puppy!" while you're doing it & if he is really smart & food motivated - he should get it really quickly!

Anything you want....just keep adding to his list of " TALENTS"
Catching and retrieving, teach him to understand silent ( hand ) commands, finding hidden people or objects etc., our dog can pick out people by name, in a crowd or objects by name in a pile of multiple objects, like a bowl, a ball, bear, Frizbee, shoe, always picking the correct object.
Your dog sounds like he's all about pleasing you....you got a real gift in him.

I would teach him how to protect your family, in the event of an emergency!! And to walk as low as he can in case of a "Fire", like walk low to the ground, because of smoke inhalation. And to warn the family of "prowler's" , and or "Bad guys", those sorts of things. So, IMPORTANT!!! Our dog, was racist! And we never taught her to be, because we're not racist! But, if she ever saw anyone of color, she'd bark, her head off!! And even act like she wanted to attack them and the "Mailman!!" We felt sorry for people she'd bark at that were of color, and the mailman, or UPS, or anyone in uniform, cops too!!! But, she was a very good "Family dog!!" And would protect us from anyone who would come to the door, that she didn't know already!! She was an Amazing dog, and we all miss her so very much!!! Your dog sounds like a pretty smart dog, too!! Your not being cruel to him, so dont let anyone tell you any different, you know. Smile!!!

Sounds like a great dog!
Teach him to play dead - Point your finger at him (like a gun) say BANG, then teach him to drop into a laying position.
