If you're an American just say wine. They will be very understanding because all of France loves Americans. They don't care if we can or can't speak their language. They'd be speaking in German if not for us. Remind them of that. If this doesn't work(and it won't) try Vin

the word 'vin' has a nasal pronunciation, so it does sound somewhat like the word 'van' but the 'n' is stifled, not pronounced. it's somewhere between 'vin' and 'vah'.
