Internal moisture and proper fats (olive oil, avacado, nuts and the like,) are the only real way to prevent split ends. If you grow your hair out from the scalp healthier and stronger, it will remain that way with proper nutrition, care and hydration. Split ends also come from mistreating hair and raking through it (while wet especially) and over processing and/or heat styling it.
Straighteners are the worst thing you can use on your hair. It flattens the normally round shaft, Fry's it, and then pulls it taught. Have you ever taken scissors to a length of ribbon? That is what a ceramic plated heat styler does to your hair shaft.
Basically, after the damage is done... Getting a regular trim is the only way to repair them. All these shampoos that promise to fill in the holes in the shaft, do so with wax and chemicals that cause weight and build up.
If you must dye your already damaged hair? Always go darker... Anything lighter than your own color requires a certain amount of stripping to achieve the effect. Darker is always healthier as it fills the shaft rather than strips it.
I find that by drinking enough water in a day helps a lot! I like the shampoo line by Ouidad the best... But I don't know if you have curly hair or not so?

If you have split ends the only way to get rid of them is to cut them off! Then you need to get some real shampoo and conditioner. By real I mean something along the lines of Paul Mitchell, Biolage, Redken, Joico, or Amplify. Nothing from the store is good. Pantene has a wax in it, that is why it makes your hair feel so soft. However, after time it will coat your hair and then it will become dry and brittle. I ude the Joico K-Pak line myself. I love it! It makes your hair so soft and shiny and the healthiest possible. I use the shampoo, conditioner, and the deep penetraiting conditioner(3x's a week). It will make your hair gorgeous! You can even get it at the walmart salon. The shampoo and conditioner run about $15 and the deep penetraiting runs around $27. It is worth every penny!

First of all get your split ends trimmed, type of conditioner would depend on extent and type of damage to your hair; has it been colored to much curled, staightened, etc.? While you're getting the trim discuss best solution with the stylist. Something with collagen & protien would be my guess. Also make sure you eat well. Balanced diet means happier skin and hair.
