Even with AntiVirus, Antispy, your computer isnt in any similance of good operating condition. That is because after repeated usage it Registry, C files and Hard disc space are loaded with unused data that ties up space and alters operation.

Sure get a good antivirus like the AVG free version plus anti spyware like Spybot free version which are updated constantly. and use those.

In addition Use a Tune-Up Utilities such as that from Tune-Up. They offer a free 30 day trial www.tune-up.com. Download to desktop, then burn onto disc for future use. If you like it pay the $39 subscription, as I do , it is well worth it and will give you the ability to keep your system in good condition. As you say in "COOL' condition

Basics:
A computer in good condition means fast ,efficient & bug free. Though fastness & efficiency are largely dependent on hardware, they can be improved using software tools. While for bugs, at the consumer level one is totally dependent on Softwares. U havnt clearly stated which playform u work on.But from ur tone i assume u use a Windows based PC. (as Mac users hardly face virus probs)

Details:
Software Recommended*:
1>>Norton/Mc Afee AntiVirus + Norton System Works(provides variety of features to manually control your system)

2>>Autoruns (from www.sysinternals.com wud help you keep a check from unneccesary programs to run at startup, now acqired by Microsoft. Many other tools can be found here)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alternatives:
1>>AVG Antivirus (free edition) (find more that suite you at freebyte.com)

2>>SpeedUpMyPC from Uniblue.com (a cheap & good Alternative to System Works)

*Always remember:
1>>to use original software & remember good things come at a price

2>>Use softwares such that their system requirement match your system configuration. Using latest softwares Do Not always
increase efficiency. Moreover getting an older version would be cheaper too.

3>>Increasing RAM(memory) is a generic rule for increasing system performance.

4>>WinXP users make sure to install SP2, the security centre is a great help.

I'm not a computer expert but based on my experience, McAfee Antivirus prevents and removes viruses really effectively. I am now able to use my computer the way I used to--no unwanted delays and other unexpected, unneccesary happenings in my computer. Try it for yourself, dude!
