I have mentioned this before but never really got a definite answer . My adorable 2 yr old very large male tabby sleeps in his cat bed next to my bed , after a couple of hours in his bed he comes on to mine and starts licking and licking me . I push him away but he slowly crouches down and sneaks next to my pillow again and continues .To me it's kisses , though cats cannot kiss , so what is he actually doing ? Is this sign of love or is it just cat instinct ? Please advise if any body really knows what drives them to do this.

Why would any male in your bed wake you and start licking you in the middle of the night? He wants some loving.

He loves you, and probably he's grooming you. Maybe he wants you to groom him too. Why not try to comb him gently for 15 minutes every night before you go to bed. This might fulfill his need to be groomed.
