First, that pup is way to young to be away from mom and litter mates. Who ever sold it to you is not a responsible breeder and by supporting this person you are contributing to the millions of dogs that end up killed in shelters every year. Return the pup for it's own good. If that is impossible then take the pup to a vet for a check up and discuss with the vet how to care for a pup that young. A pup should ideally be with it's mom for 10-12 weeks.
In regards to food pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. Your puppy is much to young to be away from his mother yet. You'll need to do some special care for the next few weeks. This may entail special foods or eating schedules, so call your vet. Otherwise, look for a good quality puppy chow such as eukanuba large breed puppy. It will tell you how much to feed the dog. Ours is only feed once each evening, but he is a much smaller dog. I suspect your puppy will need at least two feedings, once in the morning and once in the evening. You don't have to buy any wet food, which is more expensive. You can just use the kibble, it is completely balanced. You can add a little warm water to make it a bit mushier if you'd like, but it isn't necessary. You have a large breed puppy, so he'll need puppy chow for 2 years.

well, his teeth are still forming... so for about another two weeks give him a top brand food, ex; puppy chow, Iams, science diet. But do not change after you start with something (he will get the poops) get the puppy formula (it has the calcium he needs) and add just enough water to moisten it not too much, not too little. and give him about a 1/4 of a cup of food at a time. Puppies don't know to stop eating, they will eat until they explode. So limit him to 1/4 or 1/2 cup for now. In a couple of weeks he should be ready to go water free in his food. He will enjoy the crunch of the dry food. and when he gets to be about 2 or 3 months old he will not over eat anymore... he will be able to tell that he is full. Feed him.... oh... like you do... morning afternoon and night. (Again later... you will be able to put a big bowl of food out... and he will he what he wants when he wants and it will last a couple of days.) But not now. I hope this helps. Good luck with the new pup.

Sounds like you did a huge no-no. Bought a pup from a byb. Byb are irresponsible cause they just breed for money and could care less about temperments/behaviors/etc etc. A responsible breeder will refuse to let a pup leave it's mom till at least 8 wks. of age. Good quality puppy chow moistened with puppy formula, not reg. milk, 3-4 times a day....6am, 11am, 5pm, 9pm. Times are approximate.

Contact the breeder you got the pup from .Pups should stay with their Mom and siblings until at least 8 weeks. In fact,it is against the law to separate pup this young from their Moms in many states and localities. If for some reason the Mom has abandoned the pup,ask the breeder what it was feeding prior to your adoption. Feed a well balanced high quality kibble. A pup this young needs to be fed at least 4 times a day. Contact your vet for advice. It's recommended a re-homed pup be examined by a vet within a few days of coming home. Good luck.

I'm not going to beat the "he's too young to be away from his mother" drum, because I think you got the idea there.
As far as feeding him goes, he needs to eat a diet that was created for carnivores... namely, MEAT.
If you insist on feeding him crap in a bag, then stay OUT of the grocery store, and head to a specialty shop for quality feeds, or Blue seal or Agway. Read the ingredient list. Don't buy anything that doesn't have meat listed as the first 3 ingredients. Not meat by-products, MEAT. Chicken, Lamb, Beef, Duck... you get the idea.
I feed my pups (now dogs) raw meaty bones, organ meat, and offal. I get my dog food from the meat case in the grocery store, from my friends that hunt, from my back yard, freecycle, etc.
Whey you give a dog a nice meaty bone, he not only has to use his jaw muscles and upper body to tear the meat from the bone, he also has to think about the best way to get it done. He isn't simply getting proper nutrition as Nature intended, he's getting a physical and mental work out as well. He is also cleaning his teeth and gums.
My only rule is that my dogs don't eat anything with pointy teeth (other carnivores). They are incredibly healthy with sweet breath, beautiful teeth, shiny coats, balanced skin and small turds that dry up in a day or two and crumble right into the ground. Very convenient.
Were your pup a wolf in the wild (he shares 99.8% of their DNA), his mother or another female in the pack would be bringing animal parts back to the den for the litter. Some, they would swallow and regurgitate, softening it up for the pups a bit, but by this age, they would be giving the litter more and more for them to figure out on their own. By smashing the food with a meat tenderizer (bones and all), you accomplish the same thing. Bones should be soft bones, such as chicken (raw bones don't splinter like cooked bones do), rib ends, etc. The longbones in larger animals will break a dog's teeth, and shouldn't be offered.
Good luck with your pup. Get him plenty of socialization with other dogs and people because you need to make up for what he is missing during the next few weeks with his littermates.

What in earth are you doing with a 5 week old puppy?
Puppies should never ever leave their mothers until they are at least 8 weeks old!
You'll have problems with puppy nipping and also toilet training and other social problems.
Why don't you ask the dodgy person who sold you a 5 week old puppy what to feed it.....this is disgusting.
Get your puppy to the Vet so they can check it out and advise you from there.

Royal Canin is the best food out there! It is specifically designed for different breeds of dogs/puppies.It has the highest absorbtion rate(this means solid stools and less stool!) Your puppy will absorb all the good and only the waste will come out(which is not much) Most dog foods have corn meal as the main ingredient, Royal Canin has meat. Go to a pet store like PetSmart and ask an associate. Hope this helps.

Feed him about 1/2 cup of moistened puppy food 3 times a day (Morning, Noon and Night).
Really, the puppy should be with it's mother until it's 8 weeks old - Who in the world sold you a 5 week old puppy?!

First of all - he's way too young to be away from his mother.
But, since you already have him .....
You should be feeding him three times a day.
At this age you should soak his dry food in Esbilac (puppy formula you can buy at Walmart or Petsmart) after the food is completely soft, mix in a bit of quality canned food for flavor, or a bit of baby food chicken for people.
After about 2 more weeks, he should be able to eat dry food.
Keep feeding him 3 times daily to 8 wks, then he can go to twice a day feeding.
