This may be kennel cough. It is a dry hacking sound, with minimal other symptoms. Has your dog been around other dogs, and also, has he been vaccinated against bordetella?

It could be another number of things, but it sounds like canine (or kennel) cough. Good luck!

Sounds like a virus commonly called kennel cough. It is not a big deal. It sounds much worse than it really is but it can get worse if not treated. A simple antibiotic usually solves the problem in about a few days. See a vet for the prescription. I have heard of people using Robitussin as a home cure but am not familiar with the doseage. Perhaps your vet could say.

Hmm occasionally my dog does this weird thing where it sounds like shes hyperventilating. It also kinda sounds like when a person doesn't blow their nose and instead they suck it back in their nose except she does it repeatedly for about 5 seconds. Does that sound like the same thing your dog does?? Unfortunately I don't have an answer as to why my dog does it, I know it isn't that she can't breathe though, she can clearly breathe and once it's over with she goes back to whatever she was doing before. It happens a lot less now than it did when we first got her. I've always wondered what it was though and no one seems to know. So anyway, if you find out, let me know too!

update: what W said, about it being a reverse cough, I have never heard of that before and have now been looking it up on the internet and I definitely think that is what my dog does. I know it wasn't my question but I wanna say thanks to W for making me aware of this condition that I never knew existed.

It could be kennel cough~ The equivalent of a doggie cold that may be transmitted by you touching another dog that has it then handling your own. A general antibiotic cures it. Worse cases have dogs vomiting after a bout of coughs.

First you need to figure out if your dog actually has kennel cough...

* Did your dog start showing symptoms about a week after being exposed to other dogs?
* Does your dog have a dry, hacking cough that sounds as if he has a bone or something stuck in his throat?
* Your dog may possibly have a foamy, white discharge that comes up after coughing
* If your dog has a mild case, then he will still be eating and playing as usual.
* If your dog has a more elevated case of kennel cough he may run a fever or act depressed.

What kind of dog is it and how old? Dogs can do a thing called reverse sneezing which sounds like a snorting fit, it normal and not usually anything to worry about as long as it only lasts for a minute or so. But they can get many serious problems like collapsing trachea, laryangeal paralysis, heart failure etc that can cause severe respiratory problems that should be addressed right away.

It could be that the dog just has a bad cold, respiratory infection, kennel cough, or it could be something more serious like asthma.

The best thing to do is what you're already doing - Taking the dog to the vet!

BEWARE. Could be kennel cough which is infectious to other dogs. Even if vaccinated against it a dog can develop the cough (ours did). The symptons sound just like kennel cough so get to the vet and get some antibiotics. Welcome to the site.

Bulldogs have a lot of problems with mucous build up. At tiems they can almost choke on it. Make sure she gets plenty of water, and if she appears to be choking, squirt some lemon juice down her throat. This will break up the mucuous fast. If the problem persists, you should see a vet. Some bulldogs have to have surgery to widen their nasal passages, or she may actually have a cold.

It may be a reverse sneeze. It is best to let a vet have a look for peace of mind if nothing else. Good luck

Since the pup is new to you I would still have it checked out. Most likely it is just a reverse sneeze and all will be fine. Good luck glad I could help. Email me if you need anymore.
