I was trying to call a body shop phone number and the automatic recording rattled off the number and said that it was being checked for trouble. What does that mean? I've never heard that before. Thanks.

"Checking for trouble" involves taking the phone line out of service at the central office (CO) and running tests to see if they can tell if there's something wrong. This is done at the 611 operator's terminal.

Meanwhile, anyone calling that number gets intercepted at the CO and sent to that recording. Usually the test doesn't take long and the line is put back in service if nothing is found right away. If there's something wrong, a truck will have to be sent for further investigation.

It means exactly that. The customer is having difficulties with their phone line and the company is working on resolving it. In the mean time, calls cannot be put through until the issue is at least partially resolved so you will get that recording instead. Try again later. I wouldn't say you'd have to wait hours (what phone tech wants to work on a single line for hours?) just give it a try again later.

it means either they are working on the line, or it's in the process of being disconnected, when i tried calling my cousin once i got that same recording and then the next day it said the phone # was disconnected. so it's either that they are working on it or it's getting disconnected.
