If you go to Petsmart, or another big pet store, they carry "Pet-Friendly" ice melt.
Rock Salt & Driveway heat burns their paws.
Make sure you always clean the dogs paws well after going for a walk.

Yes, salt can be both irritating to the paws and dangerous if eaten. If ingested it can cause some severe electrolyte imbalances, but they would have to eat quite a bit (like get into the bag and chow) The best thing to do is to wipe your pets paws with a wet warm washcloth when the come inside, or use a pet friendly de-icer (make sure to check, many of them are not).

I to Lived in Chicago most of my life.. Rock Salt can Burn your dogs pads (The bottom of there feet) if it gets stuck between there Toes... we had 5 dogs... it only happened once that salt got stuck between there toes.. But if you see them licking or biting there feet its a good sign something might be stuck.. Plus its just a good Idea to check there feet the more you touch your dogs feet the easier it will be to cut nails and Check for anything... There are Pet friendly Salts.. & there are little shoes for your dog.. to protect there feet from the Cold and Salt.. you can get thoses at any pet store...
As far as eatting it.. my dogs have never done that, but if you have a puppy I would keep a close eye on them.. I would think if they ate to much it would make them sick...

They have pet friendly salt, that works really good, but always clean your dogs feet when returning inside, because even though the salt is okay for them, it will still suck out the natural moister in there paws. Hope that helps, about eating it there should be a warning label if there is something that needs to be done if she ate it. hope that helps .

Snow is the major culprit for my dog. Salt doesn't seem to bother her, but if she stands on snowy ground or icy pavement for more than one minute (30 seconds if it's really cold out) she can't walk. She has to wear boots to protect her feet.

Yup, it's a warning. A warning that the world isn't going to stop changing just because we became accustomed to the way things were when we were young. It's not the Apocalypse as some are believing, it's the earth doing what's it's been doing since it came into existence.
