According to Consumer Reports reliability surveys back to 1998:

BMW 7 series
Chevy S10
Chevy Blazer
Chevy Astro
Jaguar S Type
Jaguar X Type
Jeep Grand Cherokee
Land Rover Discovery (possible the worst)
Lincoln LS
Mercedes M Class
Oldsmobile Alero
Pontiac Transport
Saturn Vue
VW Jetta
VW Beetle
Volvo S80

Looking back to 1998 and not seeing any real improvement in reliability earned the above cars a spot in hall of shame. As GM cars share platforms, generally all versions of the above cars (Chevy/GMC/Pontiac/Olds) can be considered junk. Most Chrysler products get an honorable mention, but they surprisingly tend to get a little bit better after they have been out a few years.

Ford Pinto... not only did they break down a lot, getting rear ended in one was a likely death warrent due to fuel tank damage often setting the vehicle on fire
Now, every person can blame one vehicle here, yet for each that is blamed, someone else can say that thier vehicle of that kind has worked fine for them. Swear at Ford or by Ford....the endless Ford versus Chevy debate.... American versus Foreign.... every vehicle out there can a bad egg. You can veiw general trends on vehicles on sites like Consumer Reports and a few others, but even the best vehicle can have troubles.
Good luck.

Any Volkswagen with a 1.8T engine.......over 40 sensors and everyone of them will trip the check engine light! Pain in the ***. My '01 wolfsburg nothing but issues, never left me stranded but I had to sell it cause I couldn't get it to pass NYS inspections even after a month at 2 different dealers. My Jetta GLI with the 2.8l V6 runs great and I love it. So not all VW's just the 1.8T. On a strange note, the Audi's 1.8t engine is just about the same and they don't have as many issues with it. My Friends hasn't had any issues.

A Mercury Mystique, I practically had to rebuild mine when I had it. It always had recalls/defects on it. Of course the dealership fixes those for free but just having to take time out of a busy schedule was a total pain.

The worst EVER was the Yugo. But I'm not sure they still exist.

The worst I know is the Volkswagen. But with that one, people either swear by them, or AT them!
