You want to file to get back any taxes that you paid in and possibly any earned income credit that you might be eligible for

Since you worked and did not make much money, you are eligible for Earned Income Credit which may be a big refund for you---especially if you claim your child as a dependent. You should go online at the IRS website and go to the free file page (you sound like you totally qualify) and try to do your taxes online just to see what you would get back. It's so easy--I used H & R Block and they walk you through every step. Even though you only made around five thousand last year, it would totally benefit you to file and get a refund of any federal taxes you paid and to get the Earned Income Credit. And, to answer your question, yes you do have to file a return for yourself in order to claim your child as your dependent.

You don't have to file a return if you made less than $8,450. However, if you had any federal taxes withheld you'll want to file to get that money back.
If you want to get credit for your child, you must claim your earned income. It's that simple! The IRS is not going to give you credit (Dependent deduction, Child Tax Credit, EIC or the Additional Child Tax Credit) without knowing if you even qualify for it. Your income determines the amount of credit you get. No income, no credit, no refund.

File for yourself with your child as dependent. You may qualify as Head of Household. Your income is in the range that qualifies for the Earned Income Credit, several thousand dollars available to you free from the government, depending on your child's income.

This is somewhat complicated. I recommend that you see a Tax Pro. The cost of having the return done correctly will be more than covered by the additional refund.
