We have two cats: 1 male, 1 female. The male, after about 4 months in his new home, started crying excessively from around 3am to 11am every night. He's around 5 years old.

We assumed this was because of the move and did our best to ignore it, giving him affection and playtime when he was being quiet.

3 years later, he's *still* doing it. Attempts to pet / play with him fail: not interested whatsoever. He will at times run from one end of the house to the other, sometimes sitting in the shower or tub, far away from where everyone else is, and cry at the wall. it's not near the door outside or a window.

there's moderate chasing of the female at times, but nothing severe that suggests he's having some territorial crisis. As often as he runs around, he's often quite calm, though i assume it's some sort of anxiety. he'll do this regardless of having full food and water and clean litter. when he does want affection, he'll get up on a lap, grab one of our hands and pull it to his face.

have you talked to your vet about this? That would be your first step to make sure there isn't something wrong with him. It could be an anxiety thing. There is a product called Feliway, which is a phermone scent in something similar to a glade plug-in, and it is suppose to help calm your kitty. Maybe check it out and see if it helps.

That being said. My Manx used to sit in the corner and look up at the wall and cry too. This was at random times though. Our house was haunted, which makes me wonder if he wasn't seeing something that we couldn't. Maybe your cat is seeing something that you don't?

About three years ago my mom secretly got rid of my Cat Lynx. He was my best friend and she didn't want me to know she got rid of him. She put him in a shelter and within the first hour he was adopted by a girl who had one cat and was my age(at the time 10 or 11). I still really haven't gotten over Lynx but I miss him and I know he is happy. Do some things like call his old owner and ask if you can have some of his old toys. He will love them and cry alot less.

hi :)

i'm a cat lover.. and we have like more than 5 cats in our house and i can take care of more than 9 cats before...

that kind of attitude is normal for male it only means that it want to mate... yeah the male cats is looking for a female partner when it cries and that is the reason it is chasing the female cats and may be the female cat is ignoring him and that is the reason it cries again to attract another female cats nearby :)

so meaning the male cat doesn't like the female cat he is with :)

well to solve that .. just let him be.. he will find it sooner or later... just keep on giving him food on the right time you usually do .. or maybe give him another female cat :D

oh yeah even female cats do that too... its just part of their natural behavior and its normal when the cats gets horny it shouts..

if the cats doesn't do that then we can always say that there is also humans who is not that horny :D so is to cats...

hope this helps you guys in understanding cats behavior

It is one of the mysteries of cats. My female cat (got from the RSPCA rescue centre) will do this sort of thing from 11pm to about 2am. She wanders around downstairs making a pitiful cry. If you go up to her to try and pacify her she instantly runs away.
(We have had her for 4 years and not to sure of her age.) I have had cats before and they didn't do it.
I would like to know the answer too.

you say he's been doing it for a while. i'm a bit stumped.
the only thing i can think of, maybe he feels ill, and is trying to draw your attention towards it. since he cant talk, he tries and draw your attention the way he knows how.
then again, cats are just being silly. maybe he is trying to get a reaction out of you. too push the limits, i guess.
