The only immigrants who receive a benefit are asylum seekers because they are not allowed to work until their case in Home Office is decided! Most of them have an education for doctors, engineers etc.
What about Britons who are stupid enough not to study, using drugs, giving birth at the age of 16 and being single mums for the rest of their lives, living in a miserable and suicidal council house in the roughest areas of the cities etc. Do you want me to continue with the examples? And don't even get me started on what's the public opinion about the British nation in general!

If they do not get benefits and work illegally e.g. do not pay taxes, then they're in a catch 22 situation.

Which would you prefer, considering they are here already?

Also, have you not seen the medical workforce in the UK? If it wasn't for migrants I'd dare say we'd be short a a lot of very skilled dentists, doctors, nurses and surgeons who will, one day, probably save the life of someone you hold dear to yourself.

Yes, that same person claiming benefits may have a child here, in Britain, who grows into a person who discovers a cure for Cancer or a new surgucal technique, so do n't be so judgemental.

are you talking about immigration or asylum? These are two entirely different subjects. We are duty bound by eu regulations to accept a certain number of asylum seekers every year whether or not they speak English. As far as immigration is concerned, the government has recognised that immigrants are only a benefit to our economy if they can speak English and bring with them a certain skill that we need. They are bringing in new tests but it may take a while until the home office starts being more efficient.

i think its fair to ask immigrants that have come here to know english. if they have migrated here to work, how on earth do they get on benefits?
Asylum seeks on the other hand, they do not have to, but they do get the opportunity to if they so wish.
My husband came here as an asylum seeker, and before anyone makes rude comments, he speaks great english and doesnt claim benefits, and never has apart from when he first arrived.
Those that have come here because of persicution, givethem a break, they have hard a hard enough life ( probably alot tougher than you or i ), but those that migrate here either for work or through getting married, i think its acceptable that they should learn english, why should they come here then claim our benefits, they should work like the rest of us

In America it is not legal for an immigrant to receive benefits. But since to this moment in time it isn't allowed for them to cross check computers with other computers - it isn't being enforced at this time. It is being pressed by many citizens that this problem be fixed within the United States system right now.

If an immigrant was sponsored to by an affidavit of support and they get on public assistance, the one that signed the affidavit is responsible and have to pay back all monies that are given in the support of this person/family - even after they have become a permanent resident.

My suggestion is to get in touch with your elected officials and demand that they address this real problem and that those that have sponsored such people that are receiving public assistance repay the monies as they promised. It is their responsibility.

I also would suggest starting to write letters to local papers asking about this very real problem and when it is going to be addressed.

Call radio talk shows and bring up the topic.

So in answer to your question, no it isn't right. It isn't even legal. But till people stand up and demand that the laws be enforced I don't see the problem going away.

I do think people should learn to integrate if they are going to live here - integrate, that is, not denounce their culture like so many seem to want them to do. That includes learning to speak the language. In Holland, immigrants are inducted with language lessons and ''citizenship'' classes. It seems only fair and sensible. So in that sense, I agree with you, and think you raise a good question.

Which poor misguided fool started giving kudos to the BNP in this thread, thereby reducing a valid question to a farce? You sound like some South Park character yowling "if ya don't like it, you can geeeett outta mah land!". Look love, try a little common sense: the fact is you can't judge ALL cases so simply. Anyone who thinks they can needs to go back to school to learn critical thinking skills. That's not an insult, it is called being sensible and rational. You should try it.

Have you heard of individual circumstances? Let me explain.

My former boss, from many years ago, came to the UK from what used to be Yugoslavia. She could barely speak any English, but still got a job working with the public. She worked hard and learned English - and was a senior manager within 5 years. Her English is incredible and she's been a hell of a lot more successful than plenty of ''native'' Brits. So open your mind and think logically like an adult. Sheesh.

Who says they get benefits? They don't get benefits unless they have paid a certain amount of national insurance contributions. I've never met a single polish person on the dole. Ok some have council housing but you can't apply for that until you have worked here for a year...

No. Just because you cannot make it on your own, the taxpayers of a country should not have to support you. Many immigrants through Ellis Island came with nothing and worked hard to assimilate and become successful citizens.

Today's society in the US has become, for the most part, bilingual. However, I feel if your going to work in the United States you do need to learn to speak atleast basic English. English is the countries language and just as if we went to another country we have to learn the language or we don't understand. That country doesn't change their language, I would just have to learn how to speak it.

If you cannot speak English, you should get nothing. If you can't ask for it; why should we waste our time and resources on you? Your cesspool of country would not do the same for us! If you are here illegally and cannot speak English and you try to get social services, your employer should get a mandatory ten year jail sentence along with 35% of his assets confiscated. (personal and corporate) You should be sent to a public works camp to serve one year per day that you been in this country illegally with all of your assets in this country surrendered to the legal citizens/subjects of this realm.
You people from the Third World break our laws everyday in our own lands and try to turn the greatest nations the world has ever seen into the backward thinking septic tank you came from.
Listen, if you are in the UK, US, Canada or Australia...we are sick of your crap! Learn English, assimilate, become part of our culture or GET OUT! Everything you people do can be done by a machine! We are only being patient and nice with you people because right now, that's just the easiest thing to do. You foolishly take that as weakness. (That might be true in France.)
You don't deserve anything; except to be arrested and brutally deported.
