I'm 25 and have just been in my first automobile accident in which I was at fault. I hit the side of another vehicle. My car is only damaged slightly on the front bumper, while the other car's passenger side is quite dented. No one was hurt in the accident and I didn't receive a ticket. Both of us were able to drive away from the scene. I do have automobile insurance which should cover any damages to the other car, but I am concerned that this will cause my insurance payment to increase. Thoughts?

I just bought my (used) car in September. I was out of the country for 2 years, so I wasn't driving at that time. I've had this insurance since September and the price has been very reasonable thus far.

My insurance covers the other person and I have a $500 deductible on the damage to my car.I don't expect the damage to my car to cost $500 since it's very minimal. The other car got the worst of it!

First, DO NOT go looking for a new insurance company right off the bat. Insurance companies all share a driver database and they already know all about your driving record, and they frown on people who hop from one company to another. If this is your first accident, your rates might not go up at all, depending on your company's policy. The most logical thing to do is ask your agent. Questions are free. That's what they are there for. They won't think you are stupid or that you don't know how to read your policy. Just ask. They will tell you what to expect as a result of your accident. They can't drop you or raise your rates for asking a question. Only then can you make an informed decision as to whether to switch companies or not. You may find that you are better off where you are. However, it's always a good idea to compare rates once in a while. Just be sure you are comparing apples to apples. You can always get a cheaper rate elsewhere, but that does not mean you are getting the same coverage. Make sure you are getting the proper amount of limits (the amount of money an insurer will pay out for each incident) for the premiums you are paying. Like I said, questions are free. Ask your agent.

Your payments will probably increase at renewal... how much is the hard question. It depends on several factors. Could be as little as $100 a year or even several hundred a year.
If you have been with the same carrier for a while, I would suggest shopping around for new insurance. If you only have 1 at fault accident on your record... that's not too bad.
I'm almost certain that if you shop around a bit you will be able to find a better insurance rate...which will outweigh any premium surcharges you may get hit with.

Actually only your insurance company can answer the question, but you won't see any increase until it's time to renew the policy. I get an increase yearly (my policy is for a 12 month period since I have a commercial policy) with no claims, so if you see an increase it may have nothing to do with your accident. No ticket is good of course, no personal injuries even better, and that will be taken into account when they look at your policy at renewal time. You might ask your agent, but it's possible he will only be making an educated guess in his answer. Good luck, and I'm very glad you weren't hurt.

The industry average for premium increase is around 30% the first year of an at-fault accident. Only your agent will know for sure what will happen to your rates.
Some companies do offer some sort of accident forgiveness, hopefully your with one of those.

Your insurance policy WILL be affected, but don't run to hide in a corner -- it will not triple or anything! LOL.
You're looking at probably a difference of $30 per month if not less. There are a lot of variables pertaining to each individual policy so results may vary. Don't write that in stone!
Take it easy, and be careful out there! I hope everything turns out well for you and that you remain safe!

Some insurance companies let you get away with the first Accident and not count it on your insurance payments . Check into it.
How much is the damage? It may be beneficial to you to pay it out of your pocket rather then getting the Insurance involved.
