I always write and thank the people I stay with but I have not gotten any from people who stayed at my home. Is this custom out of date?

It's not out of date. I do it. Also, you bring a gift when you show up at their house, right?

With so many two career families and day care use skyrocketing, fewer people are passing on to their children the mores of our society.

I find that less people are teaching their children the art of sending cards. My parents did not teach me to send them but I am trying to instill it into my son. My down fall is timing. I do not do it in a timely fashion I stink at putting a stamp on it and getting it into the mail. I write them within a day or two but a week has gone by now and I still have it in my purse.

no, i do not believe it is out of date. i believe society as a whole is just tooooo busy to take 5 minutes out to actually write and mail a thank you. (emails do not count and thank you notes in my book)

It's probably not that common, but it's a nice thing to do.
