We picked him up on Saturday and the stage 1 slow flow nipples are to slow but the stage 2 are to fast that when he drinks from them he aspirates a little and we have to rub his back to get him to cough it out of his kungs. With the slow flow he gets very frustrated and then refuses to eat. Any suggestions would be a great help. Thanks

The reason that he is not with his mother is because she was producing bad milk. Her owners were not very clean people smoking in the house and what not. He was infested with fleas and was very dehydrated. So I am not trying to kill my dog I just know that he will be better off here than he would be at their house. Plus they were feeding him really watered down canned food in a bottle not even formula.

I tube fed my last litter of puppies when they were that little because their mom didn't develop enough milk. 2 wk old puppies may not be able to suck on a bottle - and tube feeding is a fast & easy way to get them the nutrition they need so they can start getting stronger & will be able to wean sooner.
You can find tube feeding instructions on the internet if you do a search. That way there is no risk of him aspirating the formula & developing pneumonia.
Two wks is definitely too young to be away from mom - but in this situation you couldn't help it.
At 3 - 4 wks, depending upon the pup's maturity, you can start him on semi solid foods. I soak dry dog food in Esbilac til it's completely mushy. Then add a bit of stage 1 chicken baby food & introduce it the puppy on a spoon that he can lick from.
Don't give him a whole plate of it cuz he'll stick his nose in it & inhale it.
Good luck.

There is also another solution to this. They make safety harnesses for the car that lock into the seat belt. You could take a small tarp (walmart has these for around $6.00) to cover your seat then lay a nice soft beach towel or light blanket over it with several chew toys. Plan to stop every 45 minutes or so to take her out if at all possible, it will make the ride much more pleasant. The harness also doubles as a walking harness so it's very easy to just snap your lead on it and take her out. This will give her the space to move around to stretch out in the car safely and keep you from having to buy 2 different sized crates. Petsmart and Petco has the car harnesses and you can find them online as well. They can help you with sizing and your breeder should know the pups weight and size. ADD>> It's no more safe to let an animal be loose in a car than a child. If you had an accident the dog would be turned into a projectile and most likely seriously hurt even at a very low speed. Always make sure to either use a safety harness or a crate buckled in.

Try a stage 1, then make the hole a little larger (Not as large as the 2).
I think it's wonderful that you're willing to take on the work of nurturing and caring for a 2 week old puppy under these circumstances. It's a lot of work to bottle feed and care for a 2 week old puppy and not everyone would be willing to take on the commitment!

Go to your local feed store and ask for a bottle made for a small goat or for wildlife, they are shaped a little different, like a long pointed tube. These usually work better for the shape of a dogs mouth. Or take him to the vet and ask them to show you how to tube feed him.

well with the slow flow you may be able to expand the nipple some like you would for a baby to drink cereal but just not a big whole - maybe the size of the needle- hope this helps!

I've never dealt with a pup this young, so I'm no help to you. But I do want to congratulate you for your kindness in taking this pup, who obviously had no chance at all where he came from. You are going to have quite a time (which you already know!) raising such a young pup, but I'm sure it will be worth all the effort. Bless you!

You should be able to find them in a vet's office or in any pet store in your area.
