Hi, I'm confused as to if bananas cause or can help prevent/relieve constipation? I love eating bananas. I especially love adding them to my cereal, but I've suffered from chronic constipation for years now and want to avoid any foods that could make the constipation worse. Anyone know if bananas are constipating?

Bananas can cause constipation. That is why when you have diarrhea doctors tell you to eat bananas.

They also contain fiber, which is good for you, so you really have to balance it out by cutting back on the amount that you eat each day. Remember the saying that too much of a good thing can be bad for you.

Here is a good article to read if you have constipation. http://www.healthatoz.com/healthatoz/Atoz/common/standard/transform.jsp?requestURI=/healthatoz/Atoz/dc/caz/digs/ibsn/ddconstipation.jsp

Bananas are considered binding, and useful for people who have loose bowels. BUT, bananas are also very very good for you, they contain fiber, have great nutritional value. Cut down how many you eat, eat 1/2 of one in your cereal. That won't hurt you and can only be good for you. As for your constipation problems, have you tried increasing your fiber. That would be so helpful for you. Try to decrease, not eliminate, your carbs.

Bananas would help relieve it, because of the fiber. If you are really stuck you may have to hit the prune juice. Yuck, but works.

I don't think bananas do either. A primarily vegetarian diet (no meat or dairy) combined with plenty of fruits and juices, some exercise, and some pro-biotics ought to do the trick.
