some peopel say that western pleasure judges can be paid off and you only have to have a good horse to win with, while barrel racing is totally fair because your only judge is the timer, which never lies?

Either sport takes an awesome horse to compete in. I show in both events and I have to admit I have seen one judge be totally biased in western pleasure but for the most part they are very fair looking for the horse with best confirmation and the most natural gait and willingness. I've shown my barrel horse in western pleasure and placed several times just because of the fluidity of his gates. As to something that was said above a lot of 40 + people do show in barrel racing. They do usually have their own division that they compete in but go against and beat the younger riders.

There is some merit to that argument.

However, it is not easy to get a "good horse".....you need good genetics and great training in western pleasure. I don't think judges are bought that easily. You could make the same statements about getting a good barrel horse, though. I do agree that it is more scientific to have a clock rather than a person in charge of the winner.

Keep in mind that a lot of people who are into western pleasure are older people that can't keep up with the rodeo sports, including barrels. It is a good fit for horse people that like to compete and enjoy good horses without the physical events. Are there even any events that a person who is 40 can do in the rodeo events? I don't think so.

Personally i have competed before and it really comes down to the individual judge. Whether they are biased or not is the usual problem. And also in barrel racing if a judge really wanted to, they could time you wrong on purpose, etc. You just have to trust that they are giving everyone a fair go and above all; compete for the fun of it!

It take time, money and effort to get a good enough horse. It take thousands and thousands of dollars to get the best horse like World Champion Quarter Horse. It take a lot of knowledge. Personally I think that the pleasure should be about riding knowledge of the rider not the horse. I think that barrel racing is fair. I have competed at National Level and I think it is fair. My horse cost me about "14,000.00" for my horse and it was the most expensive thing my parents have ever bought me. She won 2nd place and she got 1st in Horsemanship class. That took me time to train her and breed her correctly. She was 3rd in Barrels in Youth and 2nd in Open 3D barrels. Belive me it takes a lot of knowledge, time, effort and money to have the best horse around in USA, Canada and the WORLD. I hope this will help you.

there is no comparison. that is all there is to it. respectable judges will choose thebest horse/rider/pair, depending on the class. barrels is JUST a timer or DQ because of off-pattern
