I would hope that the Americans and British would never actually use our Nuclear arsenal against another Country, but some of the Countries currently attempting to get Nuclear Power, could be classed as a little unstable should we say politically - security is weak in these same Countries - Any nutter could get in, push a button and leave the World for the cockroaches. Personally I would prefer all Nuclear weapons to be dismantled across the globe - No point in winning a War where the planet is gone...

Th trouble with Iran having nuclear weapons is that they have sworn to eradicate Israel off the face of the map!, Obviously if they where to try then Israel would retaliate and
a limited nuclear war would start and perhaps spread out of control until the whole planet is engulfed. The counties that already have nuclear weapons with the exception of 2 or 3 know that using them is folly and would never do so unless its of a last resort!.. Iran however cant be trusted!..

The Iranian leadership appears to advocate violence to other states as a matter of doctrine. There have been speeches by the leadership promising to wipe Isreal off the face of the map.

Iran is not averse to supplying arms to other groups to go and further their political aims. The idea that they may also supply terrorists with even low grade Uranium for use in a dirty bomb is not a pleasant thought.

Iran has supplied arms to Sunni muslims in Southern Iraq before. Iran supports Hezbollah terrorists and pays money to suicide bombers families. One of the first acts after the revolution was to sieze the American embassy and hold staff hostage. Iranians took hostages at their own embassy in London.

A government like this having nuclear capabilities makes a lot of other countries nervous. Especially if that government is not averse to supplying terrorist groups to deliver its political message.

The Iranian government continues to refuse to allow international inspectors access to their facilities - something that ALL other nuclear powers allow. So there is no way of tracking the nuclear material and warheads and checking that they are not being supplied to terrorist organisations.

Unless that Iran starts to take some regard of the international community and engages in dialogue the fear is that other states may feel the need to get their retaiation in first.

Most of the answers point out that Iran has a "nutty" leader who couldn't be trusted with nuclear weapons and I sympathise with that view. But it's not enough. Many would say that the US and UK have engaged in an illegal war in Iraq and that the US in particular is applying the doctrine of "might is right" without recognition of or adherence to international law. In a world without respect for international laws the winners will be the strongest - the weak and the poor will be trampled on. Unfortunately that appears to be the world we are living in. But I'm not totally pessimistic; there are others with different views. I think there would be a very different foreign policy in the US if one of the democrats Obama or Clinton is elected president and Iran's President won't last for ever.

the US and UK are regarded as having more stable political systems than the likes of Iran, who's leaders aren't democratically elected (in reality, despite technicalities). This means that the US in particular has the power to dictate who gets to have nuclear weapons in the world, however unfair it is, its the way it works.

The US has remained allied with Israel because it is the only Judeo-Christian nation in the most likely epicentre of world war 3... the middle-east, and the Christian nation of USA wants the Christians to come out on top. Which sounds bad at first, but when you think about it it's no worse than what any other international religious power is attempting.

Besides Israel hasn't officially been declared a nuclear power yet.

For the same reasons that police and soldiers can carry guns in public (during certain times) and not ordinary people, still less those who have a score to settle.
But as your question rightly hints at, such rules are arbitrary. When we are dealing with geo-politics, it's the powerful nations that write the rules. One could argue that given the actual record of the US (willingness, and being first, to use nuclear weapons; its propensity to subvert and invade the nations it doesn't like; its paranoia which in a person whould be certifiable, etc.) it is a unlikely candidate to be allowed to possess and develop nuclear weapons.
But in the real world might is right. There's no way you can stop it or defy it.

Hmmm... many people fear that Iran's government may start selling their nuclear weapons to terrorists...

Some fear that Iran's government is not stable enough to be able to control its own weapons well enough...

And some people believe that Iran might attack its' neighbors with nuclear weapons if they develop them.

The major powers of the world have fairly stable governments and are not likely to nuke anyone in the near future.

Well mainly, because we don't have the stated national objective to eradicate another nation from the globe. If Iran wasn't led by a complete nutjob who spends his days denying the Holocaust, threatening Israel and taunting the US....well then maybe we'd loosen up and say nuclear energy...ok.

But right now, Iran is on a fast track to its own nuclear winter. Probably couldn't happen to a more deserving group of people.

Because their leader is a nut job who wants Israel erased from the map. And if he manages that whats to stop him turning his nukes on the 'evil' west' ( Incidently to all the left wing bed wetters out there, this is exactly the reason we need to replace Trident, if we have nukes, its far less likely that anyone will aim theirs at us.) Iran cannot be trusted to use nukes only defence.
