i recommend using the old samuel taylor coleridge method. pour laudanum over a sugar cube instead of water. i would not recommend using fire for any reason while consuming high amounts of alcohol and opiates.

What is the Absinthe Effect?
People usually report a sense of drunken clarity when drinking absinthe. In other words, the loosening effects of the alcohol are felt while the mind remains coherent. For best results, select an absinthe with a high thujone level and drink it fast or else you will only feel the effects of the alcohol. If drank enough absinthe, close eye hallucinations have been reported.
How Do You Drink Absinthe?
The alcohol content in absinthe ranges from 60%-90% so do not drink it straight. You will definitely regret it. The best way to drink absinthe is to dilute it with water and add some sugar. You have a choice of using either the traditional or the Czech method.
Traditional Method:
Pour a shot of absinthe into a glass and rest an absinthe spoon on the rim. A fork can be substituted for the absinthe spoon.
Place a sugar cube onto the absinthe spoon.

******The classic French absinthe ritual involves placing a sugar cube on a flat perforated spoon, which rests on the rim of the glass containing a measure or “dose” of absinthe. Iced water is then very slowly dripped on to the sugar cube, which gradually dissolves and drips, along with the water, into the absinthe, causing the green liquor to louche (“loosh”) into an opaque opalescent white as the essential oils precipitate out of the alcoholic solution. Usually three to four parts water are added to
one part of 68% absinthe.*****************
I have done both ways and this method has a better affect, maybe because the ice water releases the essential oils!

I found this out by accident, but it works really well.
Try using cherryade as a mixer. The sweetness of the cherryade cuts through the bitterness of the absinth. Goes a pink colour as well.
I suppose you could use any fizzy type drink. I'd give Dr Pepper a go as that's particularly sweet.

ah, absinth. . .is it legal in the states? My slavakian friend brought me some, and we lit the shots on fire before blowing them out and downing them. Fun stuff, but after a couple you might want to omit the fire.
