I had a root canal done about 2 months ago and it has started to hurt again. I went to the dentist and got prescribed antibiotics but they have done nothing. It is sensitive to hot liquids and hurts when i touch it or any air gets on it.
He said to go back again if the antibiotics do not work and he can either do it again or extract it. I am only 21 so do not really want to taken out. Has anyone experienced this before and if so what is best to do?

Hi Alfie!!
There are two possible explanations for what happened.
1. The dentist never got all the way down to the root, so you still have a tiny part of your nerve there and you have an infection.
2. The dentist got way down your root, and the filling material (Gutta percha) got out of and you body is behaving as if it was a foreign body.
I recomend you get an x ray, to get a proper diagnosis.

The tooth could be fractured in half. Not sure why you needed the root canal in the first place...was it abscessed, deep decay, pulpitis? If it's fractured it will hurt while chewing, hot/cold, and sometimes while you're just sitting there. Sorry but after a deep fracture down the root it's an unavoidable extraction. But like the other posters said, there may be a problem with the root canal treatment itself. Reinfection, perforated canal, and a broken off file in the canal are possibilities. An endodontist is a dentist who specializes in root canals...I'd ask for a referral to an endodontist. Good for you for not wanting to just pull the tooth! Good luck.

There is something wrong if you are having these problems.Sometimes the filling does not go right to the top of the tooth and this creates a space which can be a breeding ground for abscesses. You don't say where the tooth is but if it is a front tooth you should't need to have it out. I have had this trouble with two front teeth and in each case I have had an apicectomy (not sure of that spelling!) It sounds a bit nasty but, in fact, it is painless because you will have an injection first. It feels just as though you are having a tooth filled and, believe me, you don't need to worry about it. Good luck.

Yup. Sometimes it's the infection in there that causes the pain but after the course of antibiotics, it should have "dried up" any infection. If it's still hurting, he left some nerve in there.
I agree: do not have it extracted. Once you start "losing" teeth, you really screw up your whole mouth. I've had 3 root canals and 2 needed crowns (one didn't because it's a little-used tooth that gets no daily grinding or crunching on it).
You'll need to have him open it up, remove the part that was left and possibly even re-do the step of putting in the medicine and a temporary filling. After that, he can finish off the re-filling but...if it's a molar, you're definitely going to need a crown eventually (start saving up) because that tooth no longer gets nutrients and will become brittle and break. Once broken, there's no saving it.
If it's a "front tooth," it will probably become discoloured due to the lack of "nutrients." You'll probably want that one capped.
Sorry you have to go through it but know there's lots of us out there who have, too! I was about your age by the time I had my 3rd root canal. My "damage" was done by braces. : (

It sound like the root hasnt been completely removed as you are still having sensitivity to temperature. I would suggest you have it done again

Same thing happend to me. I recommend finding a different dentist. If he couldnt get it right the first time, then theres somthing wrong with his dentistry skills.
