Yes is the answer. Most people cannot tell one breed from another in a closely related group. It's the name Bull Terrier that will also put people off.
Anyone who knows the breed wouldn't be frightened and most dog owners do know it's not the breed but the individual dog.
As long as you are in control and not the dog I'd walk past without any worries. If it's pulling you down the street and taking no notice of your commands, THEN I'd cross over too!
It happens to me when I'm out with my Shepherd, it happens with Rottweilers and Dobermans in fact any dog that has had Bad Press!

Yes they are, The temperament of the English Bull is similar to that of a Labrador but sadly they do look as though they are some what aggressive & people will always react on first impressions. I am very into dogs & know a lot of dogs & owners, some of the kindest & calm dogs I have ever met are well treated English Bull Terriers. Of corse any breed of dog can be aggressive if they have been mistreated or badly trained.

We have 2 English Bull Terriers & have had people cross the street when we are approaching but after a while you get used to it & look upon it as their problem, not yours. They are too scared or ignorant to find out if they do have something to be afraid of. Both our dog's really love to meet new people & have exellent temprement's. I can understand people who are afraid of dog's in general but it is the ignorant one's who believe all the rubbish printed in the newspaper's that annoy me.

lol I have the same problem with my English bulls. I just ignore it now at let people get on with it, if your lucky your dog will chance some peoples opinions like mine have.
At the end of the day I call them the "Mar-mite" dogs, because you either love them or hate them.
I Have even taken my English bull terrier to a school for children with learning and physical difficulties and they loved her, even the teachers fell in love with her.
So let people think what they like as they I feel they are the ones missing out on knowing some delightful amusing animals, just because they are too stubborn to find out for themselves

People mistake many other breeds for pit bulls. Although generally it is brindle dogs--which your bull terrier could be. I think it is stupid to be afraid of any breed of dog specifically. It is due to being uneducated in dog care and behavior. I have a lab mix (brindle) and people cross the street when we come towards them too.

People are frightened because they believe everything they read & sadly don't have the intelligence to realise that most of it is rubbish! If you own an Akita, A GSD , a SBT, a Dobermann & a few other breeds, you get used to ignorant people. You just have to grow a thick skin & feel sorry for these people who don't know what they are missing in life.

I love English Bull Terriers - they are gorgeous, but not everyone understands or likes dogs, and sadly we have to accept their limitations! X to your dog from me!

A lot of people are scared of several different breeds of dogs and for a lot of different reasons! I personally am not scared of any breed of dog, because I know that it's not the breed of dog that makes them mean, but it's the way they were bred and raised that makes them mean. ANY dog can be mean if you make them that way.
