I'm going somewhere hot soon for quite a long time to live and I have 3 large quite new tattoos. I've heard the sun really fades them especially if they are only a few months old. If I put a good sunblock on them will that be enough to protect them?

I am a pretty big beach bum during the summer. I always use Bullfrog sunblock, it is like SPF 36. My tats have faded some, but they are over 10 years old. Lets see how my latest additions take it this summer though.

There are a lot of factors that can contribute to a tattoo fading or not. If your tattoo artist uses quality ink (Starbrite, Millenium, Mom's, and Intenze are the only brands that are decent), he or she uses proper techinique, you do not experience an allergic reaction (which is pretty uncommon, but more likely with red pigments), you take proper care of the tattoo during healing, and you keep it out of the sun as much as possible, especially during the healing process, your tattoo will stay almost as bright as the day you get it. The first two should not be a problems as long as you find a reputable artist. Allergic reactions are almost impossible to anticipate unless you've had reactions before, but reactions severe enough to affect your tattoo are rare. Proper aftercare includes keeping it clean, keeping it moist with either a very thin layer of A&D ointment or a mild unscented lotion applied 3-4 times per day, and no picking scratching or rubbing. Do not use antibiotic ointment. And keeping it out of the sun or using good sunblock on the tattoo is easy. If all of these things are done correctly, you should not have problems with excessive fading.

The fading might not be noticeable right away, but over time you will see the damage that has been done; not only to the tattoo, but to your skin overall.

If the tattoos are not healed you are supposed to avoid prolonged sun exposure and always use a sun block SPF 30 or higher when you are in the sun. The sunblock will help, but even with that, over time there can be damaged.

Faded Sun

Yeah it does cause the tattoos to fade. I have some writing on my arm and on my chest. The chest tattoo I've had the longest and is darker. The arm tattoo has been exposed to a lot of sun (tanning, etc...) and it is faded. Just put some sun block on it if it's going to be exposed all day. It can't hurt to take the precaution.

Yes the sun will fade a tattoo....and if you've ever stood out in the sun your tattoo will feel much hotter than the surrounding skin (especially if its a dark colored tattoo.) So use a sunblock of at least 30 SPF.

good luck

Sunblock should help a lot... most people end up getting faded tattoos if they don't keep them covered or use "protection" when out in the sun. I've seen a lot of "tattoo blue" come from black ink because girls will get a tattoo (usually a tribal "tramp stamp"), get a tan, and keep showing it off. I've seen guys with faded tattoos because they work in the sun, bike (motorcycle), or go shirtless (or at least sleeveless) a lot outside.

If your tattoos fade, don't hesitate to go in for touch-up work. It'll help make you proud to show off your ink again.

Your tattoos shouldn't fade especially since they r a few months old. I have 3 myself and I got them all in the summer. I kept them covered until they healed. They didn't fade from the sun, they just faded in time. I mean they don't look horrible or nothing they just aren't as bright as they used to be. O and enjoy the warm weather its 22 degrees here.Burrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
