You are right that it is a symbol of Jesus' death. Jesus' death was need to pay the bill for your sin and my sin. Now just the death of Jesus is not enough. What completed the process was that after three days HE arose from death to bring us new life.
If we stop at the cross then we do not see the finished work of Jesus.

Depends...
If it is a crucifix, it is to remind the Christian that Jesus suffered on the cross for the sins of humanity.
If it is a cross, it is to remind the Christian that Jesus resurrected and is no longer on the cross.
The cross itself is far more ancient a religious symbol than the Christian one. In ancient times, people saw crossroads as a holy or magical place, and the cross itself was a symbol of where this world and the other (magical/afterlife) world met. It also symbolized the holy four....the four directions, the four main elements, the four seasons....

Jesus willingly chose to die as the ultimate sacrifice, thereby paying the penalty of sin. Which is death. With his death we are promised salvation. The cross is merely a symbol. It unites those who believe though, in the sacrifice of Christ.

Don't you think that's enough? The cross symbolizes Jesus love for us by dying so that we may be forgiven. To me, it also represents the fact that He didn't stay on that cross or in the tomb....He is risen. It is a symbol of His unconditional, powerful love for His children.

It is not a symbol, it is reality. It is there our sins have been taken away and we have been given eternal life. Analyzes it any way you want but the bottom line is still Heaven or Hell. If you can just imagine the eternal horror of Hell you would never ask why is redemption so important to Christians.

We were dead in sin until Jesus took all of our sins on that Cross.1 Corinthians 1:18 "For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God."
19. for it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.

Dear Friend,
The Cross symbolises the sacrifce that God made of his only son, so that we may find salvation.
Philippians 2:6Who, being in very nature[a] God,
did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
7but made himself nothing,
taking the very nature[b] of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
and became obedient to death—
even death on a cross!
9Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
This Scripture says it all, as well as John3:16"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,[a] that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
The Cross reminds us of Gods love for each and every one of us, and of the sacrifice he made so that we could be saved through the blood of his son Jesus Christ.
Amen
God Bless

It was on the cross that Jesus paid the ultimate price for all of mankind's sins. Everytime we see the cross, it should remind us of His awesome sacrifice and love.

You want the real reason or the christian one? the real reason is to symbolize that christians are proud to have killed a God, the cross is a symbol of death and destruction.
