It's been a while since I saw the movie, and I forget all the details, but the giving of the pen by the other professors is a mark of respect. It's symbolic. If the pen is mightier than the sword, then this would be the scholastic equivalent of laying your sword at the feet of a powerful leader - symbolically acknowledging their recognition of his achievement.
