Whomever said they would surveil is wrong. They just do not have enough people to go looking for UA or AWOL servicemembers. They do not need to. He will never be able to obtain credit, social security benefits, pay taxes, or if he tries to get a job and the employer pays his income tax withholding, the IRS will report his workplace to the Absentee Collection Unit. They will call the local sheriffs office and he will be detained until the ACU comes and gets him. Also, if he is pulled over by the police, he will be detained. There are so many computer tracked activities that he can be caught easily. He will never get a loan on a house either. Or a drivers license, Just about any activity that involves your social security number will be a No-no, unless he wants to be arrested. His best bet is to go back. If he does not want to go to Iraq, have him smoke some pot, the penalties are much less, but in my opinion, he signed up, just go and do your duty.....semper fi. If he gets arrested and put in jail and cant get a job, good luck on getting any child support.

I don't think it's too much of a stretch to imagine that NIS will want to have a chat with you. Will they harass you? Depends what you consider harassment. They'll take your dependent ID away after 30 days or so.
How long will they look for him? Until they find him, however long that may be. :) That kind of goes with the whole "he's a fugitive" thing.
Seeing as Uncle Sam has a long memory and this stuff only gets worse with the passage of time, the best thing your idiot ex husband can do is TURN HIMSELF IN.
AWOL/desertion terminated by voluntary surrender to military control gets better treatment than AWOL/desertion terminated by apprehension.
All it takes is one traffic stop and he's popped.

They may stop by but don't expect much more than some questions asked. And no...they won't put you under surveillance or anything either or harass you. All that will be done is a warrant for his arrest will be filed so if he's ever contacted by law enforcement he can be taken into custody and returned to military custody.

No, they will not. They'll call, send an AWOL letter, then put him in the AWOL Database. Like it has been said, someday he'll get stopped for a traffic charge and sent back to be outprocessed.

Honestly, the military does not chase AWOL servicemembers. A warrant is put out for their arrest and they are taken back and out processed. It is called trimming the fat. I am a major in the US Army and I have never had to send anyone to chase AWOL soldiers. We send a letter and make a phone call-that is it.

Oh yes, do expect a visit and if he was a higher rank expect surveillance too.
They WILL be looking for him activly for 3 years, then scale down for a further 5, and will stop looking after 10 yrs - though his 'file' will remain open for 75 yrs.
Dont expect harrassing though - 'its not your fault'!

Someone from his command might call but they wont come hunting him down. It's like he didn't pay a traffic ticket. He'd be in the system if he was pulled but it's not like they're going to be kicking in doors to look for him.

Sure they will since he told you what he was going to do .But they will only watch you for awhile .And that will be your local police .
And they will never stop looking for him .Better to give his self up and face the prison term.

I don't know. Hopefully it will be like when George W. Bush didn't show up for the Air National Guard. Someday he will be President.
