I am leaving for Fort Benning for army basic training in a few days and I wanted to know if I am allowed to bring cough drops. Also, Is there anything else I should not bring? (besides the obvious contraband, knives, books, medicine, weapons etc...) Please do not post if you are not qualified to answer. Thank you

Generally the only medications you are allowed to have at basic are issued or prescribed by the medical facility on post. When you get to basic they will go through your stuff and confiscate anything you shouldn't have. Cigarettes and lighters are not allowed, it is also a bad idea to bring contact lenses and solution as you won't be allowed to wear contacts. I would not showing up with earrings in or any peircings for that matter and very little jewelery, a watch is good, no rings or necklaces, you'll be wearing dog-tags for a necklace.

When I was in Fort Leonard Wood in the Army in the wintertime for BCT, we were allowed to purchase ONLY menthol cough drops (so no "flavored" or "candylike" drops). I do not recall if we were allowed to bring any from home. Perhaps you should just wait until you arrive on base -- you'll come down with the sniffles like everyone else in the barracks, and you will be allocated a specific amount of spending money for basic needs (including an extra allocation for feminine needs.)
By the way, good luck, have fun, it will be something you never forget.

They will provide you with all the medication you need. I served 10 yrs in the US military, and also worked for 2 yrs on the Battalion staff at a recruit training center. You will have all your belongings boxed and shipped back to your family, including all contraband. If you are ill maybe you should ask your recruiter if you could delay your start date since if you are ill, you may be put back a week if you're unable to train.

if you get sick, you go on sick call. If it's just a cold, you get a cold pack with cough drops. If it's worse, you'll be sent to the Troop Medical Center where you'll be evaluated.

Bring what is on the packing list off of www.futuresoldiers.com

That's it.

After I went to basic, I had the civvies I wore to normal, an extraordinarily modest Timex, a comb, and a rip-discontinue/Velcro wallet. That's it. Correctly, I suppose that is about all I took to my Officer Orientation coaching too. LOL massive mistake there.
