Yes, sparrows primarily live on grain and seeds but in the cities, I've seen them eat anything from little bits of bread, to insects and fruit.. They're like nature's mice-on-wings.. They'll eat almost anything and reproduce like mice too...

The problem with earthworms or night crawlers is they are actually carriers of parasites. They are notorious for carrying what is called "Gape Worm". There are a few birds that survive on only earthworms one being the American Robin they have adapted to what they might catch from a worm. Sparrows on the other hand do eat insects but not earthworms. Thanks to cartoons it is a common misconception that "All" birds eat worms. Generally Sparrows are seed eaters, but will eat insects that they find while scavenging around. Don't feed them bread, for one thing that is another misconception about birds really there is no nutrition involved. If they eat it in the wild it is because they are able to supplement their diet with other healthier foods. f it is a baby bird you are dealing with, Take into consideration that they will eat anything if you feed it to them. That does not mean that it is good for them. If this is a baby contact a trained professional that deals with wildlife. Baby birds are not as easy to care for then most people think, to be safe you can contact your states Department of Fish and Game they will direct you to the proper authorities. An adult bird will eat what it wants. I would offer seed and contact a professional.

Sparrows are basically seed eaters, but they will supplement their diet with other things. When birds are breeding and molting (that is replacing their feathers, which they do either once or twice a year, depending on the species) they require extra protein. At those times even seed eaters will eat insects. That being said, sparrows are not built to dig for worms. Its more likely that they would eat insects. If you look at the bill of a sparrow its short and thick. Birds, like thrushes, which eat worms will have a longer bill more adapted to digging.
