Well, I say as long as you act like a child you are one! I know some pretty mature young people who are responsible and trustworthy at 13 and I know some "adults" who still act childish.

We tell our kids, "with responsibility comes privilege". The more responsible our kids show themselves to be, the more independence and privilege they are given.

Mom of 5 with another on the way.

Well, everyone under 18 is a minor, in their parents care. Which is the way it should be.

However, my opinion on how to treat the stages for minors are as follows,

0-2 Baby
2-4 Toddler
4-13 Child
13-18 Teenager

So, yes your right, at 13 i would consider someone a teenager, not a child. However still in their parents care.

In most states you legally become an adult at age 18.
I've heard it said that 18-21 are the "trial" years, and at 21 you become an adult.
I believe that you are an adult when you have both the age and maturity to be on your own.

At 13, you may think you have the maturity, but you don't have the age. Just be a teen right now. It goes a lot faster than you think.

In the USA you must be 18 to make legal contracts...

But you can be tried as an adult for crimes at age 12 if they determine that you ARE aware enough of your crimes...

The human brain is not fully developed until about age 25...

And, 13 yr olds always think they know everything (but you just can't get them to put it down on a test)

there are levels of independance. at 13 you can do your own laundry and do many chores and showed do them. however at 13 they can't pick their own bed time or when and who they want to go out with. They can go places more than before and without supervison but as a parent you need times and places and if they falter from those they need to have privlages removed

Here's how I view it:
8 years - old enough to know and choose between right and wrong
12 years - on your way to becoming an adult, but still need a lot of guidance
16 - old enough to date in groups and make most of your own choices, with limits set by parents
18 - you're an adult

Well, it depends on the child.
IF ITS A GIRL:
You can start calling them a Young Lady by 8 or 9. But you should call them a Woman bye age 13-14. They have grown up, and Don't like to be treated as though young.

IF ITS A BOY:
Well, you should call him a teenager when he is one. Such as 13. But DON'T call him a man until he is one, like 18-21 you should start. If you call him that to early, men tend to get big heads. :-)
