Yes, you will need a FireWire cable and a FireWire port installed on your computer.

Check down below the link to see what a firewire is all about.
Check your canon's manual to see it it uses a firewire or a USB 2.0 cable.
If your Operational System is Windows XP, you shouldn't have problems having it detected, but if you still do, install the drivers that came with the camera.

Yeah you will most likely need Firewire, Firewire is more used than USB because the transfer is faster. My computer came with a firewire port but did not work properly so I had to buy a seperate card. there not expensive I paid I think 40$ Canadian for mine.
