Surely each of in his own mind has a personal belief on whether the Bible is true or not. All I'm interested in is WHY you believe what you believe.

So far only eldad9 and Wink Winkleman have given concrete reasons as to why they believe what they believe---one person talked about errors through translation, but if you do research, that is a ridiculous claim.
Any other answers? Otherwise it's between eldad9 and Wink Winkleman...

Give me one good reason why it's a divine revelation and not just a book like any other.

I believe the Bible is the true because what was prophesied in the Old Testament, particularly the incarnation of Jesus, were fulfilled. The other reason is the Bible contains eternal and universal truths which have stood the test of time - The Ten Commandments, The Great Commandment, The teachings of Jesus. It is true that there are many errors and contradictions in the Bible but not everything in the Bible is divine teaching. God allowed those errors because it has nothing to do with our salvation. There are many things in the Bible which were placed there for historical, cultural, geographical or poetic reasons, but when it comes to our salvation what the Bible teaches is inerrant and infallible.
Have a nice day!

It is not 100% true nor it is 100% baloney. Bible was first written some 200 years after Jesus had passed(as for the Christians) or lifted to be with god(as for the Muslims). Can you write accurately an account of what happen to you or what you were doing about a year ago? I don't think so. Christians believe Jesus died on the cross and resurrected 3 days later. During the 3 days who was maintaining the world if god was dead? They will say "The Father" or "the holy spirit" and yet they say they believe in one god.

the bible was written by humans, not by god nor jesus and humans have a tendency to interpret facts, not present them as they are. i do not state the the bible is fake, but i say that some facts are the presented through the eyes of the viewer.
the bible was written long ago, and people were living in sin and everything was a mess (take the roman empire and their idea for fun). to light up this "chaos" that was all around the word, a new set of rules had to be created. this is how the bible appeared.
nothing out of the ordinary. just a set of rules that stated that is only one god (against the current religions that had more than 1), one almighty god that is the judge of all humans. this kinda put an end to polytheism (that means every person could adore one different god, and act in it's name -- now picture a god of war and wrath and his believers).
the image of one god is absolutely fabulous. great mind thougt of that. it's kind of utopia. every person having the same beliefs and going the same way as the one near him. one great ideal, building a society in harmony, with one ruler, God.
well, not a good idea after all. so did the inquisition appear and totalitarianism. these are just 2 examples of misunderstanding the bible.
one more thing to mention about the bible. this it is in fact a series of stories developed by various people and the bible grew over time (like a snowball when threw from a hill top--when it reaches basis it considerably larger) in order to keep up with the changes in the world.
then the priests appeared who, instead of adjusting the bible to the current times they keep it as it is the pillar of our existence. so the bible became esoteric, the non believers became pagans and we live with the hope that our way is the good way, and that's because everything can be interpreted over and over and in various ways.
so, as a conclusion, bible cannot be 100% true or 100% false, because , in my opinion, it reports facts seen through the nonobjective human eye.
thank you for reading this and excuse my bad English.

I have asked believers why they believe and it usually (always) has something to do with faith. And I have been told that if I read the Bible and ask God or the Holy Spirit to guide me, then I will have the understanding or I will then be able to believe. The problem is, you have to have some kind of faith or believe already in order to genuinely ask for that kind of guidance. So it's a circular thing as far as I can tell.
I don't believe it because it is too unbelievable. That's my reason. And there are some historical accounts in it, which is natural given how it was written, however so much of it is too far fetched for even my own crazy imagination.

Its not 100% in either direction. Most of the bible was written by perception. Look at each of the Apostles views on the crucifixion. Does the differences in perception make the actual event any less true in having happened? Because it was written by man, you are going to find contradictions, or absurdities. I believe the bible is meant as a guide to God, the belief, and his ways.
Like anything else in life you have to stop looking for black/white and see the gray.

You don't leave a lot of room to discuss.
The Bible was principally written during two great periods of Persian influenced writers.
The first was around 600 to 590's BCE by Jeremiah and Baruch, tasked by the Persians to stop the satan worshipping child sacrificing Israelites.
The second was around 455 to 410 under Nehemiah and Ezra, again under Persian control to finally standardize Judaism under the Babylonian Talmud.

No flood ever covered the whole earth. Man was not made from dirt. The earth is more than 6000 years old. At no time in history did men live anywhere near 1000 years. Neither shell fish or homosexuality is an abomination of God or anything else for that matter. Bread has never rained down from the heavens. Need I go on?

my opinion based from the writings of socrates to karl marx, and st. augustine and st. thomas... its 100% baloney! if you know your history very well with analysis, you should know the answers to this. don't just read the bible, be open to ideas, don't copy cat, and most people believe because they argue "everyone believes in it, playing safe". the state made religion for people to become submissive, and to act with the sense of respect for each other, the rulers and God.. Read constantine, what really happen, criticize and think. Machiavelli as well, there are so many things in this earth that are forbidden for us to learn because most of them were censored. (the writers in the bible experience miracle and punishment from god, because there is no scientific explanation, they see and write or explain what they see based on what they know, and now why there is no miracle and punishment... conservatives and christian extremist believes everything that happen in this earth is a punishment, but there is a scientific evidence why this is happening, one of this is global warming, when we know for a fact we all contribute to this crisis)

Accurate prophecies and reliable guidance despite the passing of thousands of years since it was completed......this is strong enough reason to put faith in the Bible. Archaeological evidence along with other historical pieces of collaboration show the Bible to be more than simply a "good book", but a book inspired by our Creator, and a book that can help us live the true and real life. Although thousands of years old, there is nothing within its contents that cannot pertain to us today as far as the laws and principles for living a godly life are concerned.
Today we have people offering self-help books left and right, with opinions and viewpoints changing at the drop of a hat, but the counsel contained in the Bible was given once and can bring us true benefit if applied.

its false. there are so many contradictions in it. back then most people couldnt read so was written by people who could write what they wanted. also when you translate things you loose the proper meaning and this has been translated through so many languages it can not be true to the original text. plus when was the last time you saw some proof of gods existance
in reply to your claim that you dont loose things through translation, what a load of garbage and you know it. you cannot translate things with out fault. example japanese or korean dvd/video instruction manuals make little sense when translated into english
