Sticking to the basics, generalyy the solar panels used to trap the solar energy themselves are expensive and contain a type of liquid which retains heat collected. This liquid too has a limited life span and has to be periodically changed as we do change engine oil of car engines.Batteries used to store electricity in these cases too are expensive, and they too have limited life span and occupy a lot of space.

Its simple....You cant use solar energy at night! besides the photovoltiac cells used to convert solar energy into chemical energy are not easy to manufacture. And yes also because petrol and diesel were found before solar energy as energy source so it will obviously be difficult to eliminate its use completely.

solar energy is cheap
but the cost hidden behind the installation of solar cells before the production of power starts.
and a solar cell produce only few volts (i forgot exactly but i think it was .07volts) so u need a lots of solar cells to produce a suitable amont of power.
other problems with solar energy is the variation of solar energy, as in summers a large amount of power can be generated n in winters when their is sun for few hours only so the power generated will be very less.
and in rainy days when the sky will be full of clouds their will be no sun's light on earth and power generation will stop.
and petrol and deisel can be used in any of the condition.

Running cost is more than the output achieved,Companys like Shell etc are doing extensive research to find alternate material to maximise harnessing of Solar Energy at most economical rates.

It's not cheap because it's neither easy nor economical to convert photons into electrons. And, because it isn't terribly economical, there aren't too many people who are willing to use it.
Figure out how to do Solar Conversion at about 85% or greater conversion efficiency, and for a price that's competitive with fossil fuels, and it will change.

solar energy is the cheapest but utilising it is costly .
the solar cells are prepared from semiconductors which are doped with n-type or p-type conducters . these semiconductors are yet not available easily in sufficient amount which makes the solar cells or panels costly .

solar energy is cheap becace its fully natural .and theyare always always available.
on the another hand non renewable sourcesr costly because one day it will surely come to an end.
