It is a common short name for the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)

Basically, it is just an image of a CD's data. Using this file, you can burn a copy of a CD the ISO was made from...errr put it this way:

I made a Metallica music ISO image from one of their CD's. This ISO image contains all the songs and data needed to burn a copy of the CD without doign a disk to disk copy. I would load the ISO file into my cd-burner program and insert a blank disk. Once the burning is complete, i now had the Metallica song album on CD with all the tracks and data.

Winrar will let you see files contained in SOME ISO images, but usually the files are no good unless burned to CD b/c some disk images are bootable disks, games and such.

ISO is a bootable cd / dvd standard.

For example, when you have a new computer, it has no software on it, yet you drop in your windows cd, and the computer is able to startup and install.

All this information to bootup etc is contained on an ISO disk.

I used one just last week for putting Linux on my computer.

When I had not burned the disk as an ISO, it simply wouldn't boot up...

Understand?

A .iso file is a file that can be either burned to a DVD+R or DVD+RW disk, or mounted with a 3rd party program.

All that they've said are true. In addition, I'll say Alcohol too can be used to burn .iso files.

This is a CD Image file. Use a tool such as Daemon tools to use it as a virtual CD drive, or use Nero to create an actual CD from it.
