Well the adults are easy - cheese, crackers, wine & beer. As for the kids??? Well kids this age like cool stuff that does not resemble 'little kid' parties. I would go for a couple of dvd's (only the latest) & home delivered pizza - make it a 3D movie that comes with glasses if possible. Get some music (top 40) that everyone can listen to while chatting & having pizza. Perhaps the kids could invite some friends over in fancy dress. After the pizza spread out some snacks & turn off all the lights & make it something special. A good time to have this party is a Friday afternoon from 5-7pm or sometime similar. This one has worked a treat for me & my daughters friends loved it too.

Finger foods tend to be best for kids parties. And you can make the finger foods match the theme of the party.

As it's a boy and girl, you will need a theme that is not exclusive to one sex (IE: no princess parties). BUT you can mix and match themes. Like you could do a Medieval theme and have knights for the boy and princesses for the girl. The most important part of the theme is that it should address an interest of both children. Do they like dinosaurs, a particular movie, animals, etc?

Games can be matched to the theme also. Like you can revise pin the tail on the donkey to pretty much any theme. For example, my daughter wanted a teletubby party, so I printed a huge La La off my computer and when pinned her tummy tv on. Or for halloween, we pinned the nose on the jack-o-lantern.
Crafts are also fun to do at parties, as they calm the kids down and are something the kids can take home to remember the fun.

As for presents, it's always a good idea to ask the parents. They typically have a good list of what the child needs and wants. Plus, it's always fun if the presents match the theme is some way, even if it's just the wrapping paper.
Don't worry about catering anything specifically to the adults. Most parents just have a ball watching or playing with their kids at parties.
Make sure to have lots of film and extra batteries to record the event!
Good luck with your party!

Depending on where you live, if you look in your local yellow pages you can find a lot of ideas.
For my nieces birthday we hired a double decker bus, there are two in total one male and one female, each bus comes with a face on the front and painted either blue or pink, they each contain a play area with ball pool and climbing frames it was great fun for them.
You could also ask your child if they want to suggest the theme for a party. like face painting, organising the goody bags, what type of cake they want, get them actively involved. the type of food we went for are the typical, pizza, sarnies, buns, crisps, choccies, and maybe for the adults, put some jacket potatoes in the oven and do a curry or chilli and let them help themselves.
We played the traditional pass the parcel and did loads of layers, so that everyone can have a go and get a prize.
You could also suggest that everyone comes in fancy dress, thats always fun and the best dressed gets a prize.

I think if you play the usual party games like pass the parcel, pin the tail on the donkey musical chairs and statues, the adults can play too. Food should be typical birthday party food even adults like jelly and ice cream and finger food. Look in the freezer cabinet in local supermarkets they do great party food and it will save you having to make it all. Go to the pound shop and find lots of little present for prizes. Good luck I hope it goes well.

finger food is best coz kids of that age just graze
as far as games are concerned it depends on the size of the room you have,
why not make it a theme party, little miss makeover or barbie for girls,
pirates or cowboys for boys
flap the fish is a fun game and if you can get areally big sheet you can play parachute games.
remember to have a bottle of wine for yourself after its all over you will need it

have you ever thought about a costume party? pick a theme...eg animals and they could hunt through the garden/yard for prizes etc.games involving animals like:"doggy, doggy, who's got your bone" and duck, duck goose, pin the tail on the donkey could be played and then there's always the pinyata game.i dont know about everywhere but here in australia we can buy animal paper plates and cups to add to the effect and u could bake animal shaped cookies.just a thought...rember dont stress over it,it's ment to be a fun affair.best look into what their interests are before choosing the theme..that may help.good luck and have fun

Go for a treasure hunt game based on their favourite characters. Leave clues around the house directing them to the next clue and giving them fun tasks to do. At the end have a couple of presents for the winning team. I remember my parents doing a horror version of this for me. It was really scary and I had to do things like rummage through fake intestines for clues. (Maybe go with something a little less disturbing for your two though).

for a boy i would do a super hero for a girl i would a princess theme. macaroni salad chips dip pizza finger sandwiches. what u could do is call a collage that has a cooking program and tell them your situation and they would do it for free as a test for the students i did that for my brothers baby shower. it was wonderful it looked so expensive and it wasn't. all you do is supply the food they cook it serve it and your free to play with the kids. the best thing i remember at my party's were PINATAS/a big hit for children. the best of luck to you.
