1) Too shy and therefore pretending not to notice me by kind of ignoring me, but never ignoring me directly if I approach him?
2) Want to distant himself from me because he suspects I like him more than as a friend and he does not want it to go that way?

Odds are he's shy.
Ask him out, or w/e.
Otherwise shy guys will never go out.
If not, well, you just experience what most guys do.

It's hard to tell. You need to talk to him and be honest with him. Let him know that if he doesn't like you in the way you want him to, that it's okay. You're just attracted to him and wanted to go out sometime. Most guys would be flattered by this. Maybe he is just shy and doesn't know how to react around you. In that case, let him know that it doesn't matter to you, and you just want to hang out some time.

There is really no way of telling the two apart....The only way is to talk to him and find out if he likes you. But either way, it looks like you have feelings for this guy.....
