I want a throatier sound with better gas mileage and HP. If you could give the improvement numbers for these two things, that would be great.

Looking for sound and power huh? well I'd recommend a "FLOWMASTER super 40 series" i don't know the improvment numbers but i assume around 5-18 hp gain over the rev ranget. Muffler alone, you can then think about adding a "Cold air intake" i'd search Ebay motors, and this would add about the same amount over the rev range...
I did both of these things to my 1988 Chevy Silverado 305 5.0 V8, and was happy with the feel "hp/trq" gain and sound of the "super 40 series"! very happy. Overall cost was about $300.00 total Muffler&intake.
