I just need a overall good lens that will also work with low light situations. I have a tamron 28-200 and it's horrible in low light. Is the Nikon 50mm f1.8 what I'm looking for? Thanks in advance.

Yes, it is.
The focal length is a bit long for indoor use but there are no inexpensive, low-light wide angles. The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 would be perfect but it costs $430.
I personally use a Nikon 50mm f/1.4 ($200 used). For the extra price you get another half stop, and a bit better image quality up to f/4.
The 50mm f/1.8 is a good lens however, and fantastic value for money.

hi,

i am new to photography, but i have learnt that the lower the f/stop values (the wider the aperture) of the lens, the better they are for low light photography, but such lens are normally many times more costly too.

to get a better exposure for indoor photography, you can either use a wider aperture (low f/stop value), or reduce your shutter speed - but if it falls below 1/60, you probably will require a tripod to prevent your shots from being blurred. there is a guideline for using the minimum shutter speed - eg. if you use a 200mm lens, you will need a shutter speed of 1/200mm or faster. for 50mm lens, a shutter speed of 1/50 mm or faster. or you can increase the ISO sensitivity of your camera, but this will result in the graininess of your shots when ISO exceeds 400. different cameras have different results but in general, higher ISO settings degrade the quality of the shots.

just sharing my thoughts.
