When exercising to lose weight and build strength you need to do cardio and lift weights. While jumping rope is good exercise few people do it long enough to call it cardio. Can you honestly skip rope in one place for 30 minutes or more? I couldn't. I would be extremely bored and wouldn't be able to keep up the routine for more than a few days.

It's excellent exercise, but unfortunately, it is too boring to do it enough. You might do it for a few days, then you will REALLY not want to do it again.
Try going for a walk everyday, then mix up the route to keep it entertaining.

Yes. It's excellent cardio vascular exercise. Gets the heart pumping and you really only need to do it 20 minutes a day.
