We do tell them not to be on the shelf when we are at hom but thrice I've come home to find the lid off and once, on my boyfriends bday we found one of the fish on the floor and two kitties with wet paws, I picked it up because it wasn't breathing and put it in the toilet then waited for my BF to come back so he could see his fish lo and behold the damn thing pulled a lazarus and the cold water shocked him back to life my question is how do we teach the cats to leave the fish alone?

Cats will be cats, and they will not listen, see about putting a bowl of cut lemons around where the tank is, citrus repels cats.

I have the same problem. The thing to do is cover the fish tank with either a mesh or something. Small enough so the cat can't put a paw through but large enough to drop the fish food in and allow a little air circulation. Cats will be cats.

get a wire screen to put over the fish tank and either attach it or weigh it down with a couple of heavy rocks or items. punish your cats for getting on the screen when you are home. You will have to leave it there. It's in your cats nature to want to fish!

Theres nothing you can do. Its in a cats nature to hunt its food. Fish look interesting to a cat and they think the fish look like fun toys. Move the fish take into a different room with a closed door.

My cats do it to my fish to.

lmao.. we have that problem with our fish and birds.
get a spray bottle and fill it with water and squirt them when they get around it.
that will help while you're at home.
while you're not at home take STRONG lemony things and surround the tank outside with the smell. cats don't like that smell..
get screen like material and cover the opening of the tank.
if all else fails fix it where the cats can't jump on the tank or get to it.
