Every system starts as an idea. As the idea persists, many myths and traditions accrue to it. A philosophy gives a life and force to it. Thus a system evolves with the force of habit among a large section of the people.

During 1800s, Anthropologists had a problem as to how
to classify human beings. One resercher proposed the
expression "intelligent animal". After advanced studies
on monkeys, it was dropped. Another reseacher proposed
"tool using animal". After observing some animals
making small wooden tools which were used for many
puposes, it was dropped. Another researcher proposed
"weapon using animal". A decade ago, a rare film was
shot in African forests. One short monkey was hit very
badly by a big monkey. The short monkey prepared a
wooden knife using stones and hid it on the top of a
tree. After some days, when the big monkey came to attack
the short monkey, it ran up to the tree for the weapon
it has hid and killed the big monkey. The one thing
that the anthropologists found with any group of human
beings, even if they did not have contacts with the out
side world for thousands of years, is spirituality with
some form of religion. So, man is a "spiritual animal"
if you want to call him that way. "Manush" (human) was so
named because he has "Manas" a mind higher than that of
the animals which realises the divinity in creation.
It was present since the creation of human beings.

From sound vibration of the eternal spiritual flute of the lord they pour forth.
They are timeless and hence they don't evolve. This is how one must distinguish between pseudo principles and eternal principles.

The one underlying objective behind all spiritual practices is man's spiritual evolution - thats is to uplift man from his current level in spirituality to the next. And then what does this 'spiritual upliftment' mean after all? Again it is for the good of man and all of mankind - HAPPINESS.
SO if you see all spiritual practices and attempt to understand their effects, all of them lead to one of these things - sacrifice of one's desires(Bodily, mind and wealth), Love (unconditional, which is again said to be Lord's attribute), Company of Holy people...etc.
For a few examples:
Karmayoga : Attempt is to perform work - without expectation, or sacrifice its outcome to the Lord...etc.
Bhaktiyog : Attempt to glorify Lord in various ways - prayer, puja, bhajan so much as to become one with Him and lose oneself in Him to experience Happiness (absolute).
Karmakanda of the Hindus: To please the Lord's various avtars through methodical puja, Yagya, Homa-Havans, using sattvik materials...etc and seek His blessings.
One more thing that stands out in all these principles is :
Purpose is to :
- cleanse the mind of unwanted/inconsequential thought process
- Perform more and more activities in the remembrence of the Lord thus imbibing His attributes(Happinesss, Peace, Prosperity...etc) into ourselves.
So also prayer, service of the society without expectations, Dhyanayoga...etc

GOD is spirit. Man has a spirit from birth given by GOD. Man's spirit yearns to return to GOD. Man dies and spirit returns.
