Im replacing my A/V Reveiver. My sustem has 5 speakers, but I am interested in a 7.1 receiver. Is this a problem in any way or will the additional two speaker ports just be unused?

My receiver is 7.1. But, I an only using 5 speakers. This is no problem since receivers can be configured by you the user for however many speakers that you have. Whatever channels that you aren't using are shut off when you indicate no speaker connected.
