actually you do not need long fingers to play piano or guitar. it merely means that you have a bit of an advantage. you just need lots of practice.

There are a lot of talented short-finger musicians out there. Practice will give you more flexibility, and as you get better, you can select pieces that show off your talents within your range.

I don't think surgery would work even if you could do it -- it might damage your fingers so you couldn't do any musical instrument.

You might want to consider different instruments, too. The ukelele or mandolin has a smaller neck than the guitar, for example.

Appreciate what you have, and make the best of it -- you'll be surprised how good it is!

Long ago there WAS a surgical procedure for increasing keyboard "reach". It involved the severing of certain tendons between fingers. I can't remember the classical pianist that tried it but, as I remember the story, it almost entirely ruined his piano playing ability. The healing process for any such procedure would take so long that the practice loss would be a setback. The risks of things going wrong are also far too high.
As another mentioned, many famous players do not have long fingers. I remember reading an interview with Pink Floyd's David Gilmour where he states he had to play particularly soulfully due to his short, fat fingers. Furthermore, many people have long fingers but cannot play any instrument.
Work on lots of finger dexterity exercises. Practice, practice, practice! Work on creative alternative notes when you cannot reach the toughest ones.

that is just not possible.
it is almost the equivalent of saying you need to be 5' 9" so you can be a model!
if you don't already have it, you just have to work with what you DO have.
unless you are still going through puberty, you fingers aren't going to get any longer, you just have to work a little harder than everyone else.
but when i was younger, i played piano and guitar, and i don't have longer fingers than any other average person.
just be happy that you have fingers at all! some people aren't so lucky, and i wouldn't risk doing anything to them that would affect your usage of them in the future.

You can try stretching your fingers but don't hurt yourself! The results will not be immediate. My friend has fairly small hands and he has been playing cello for 11+ years since he was a child. His left hand is significantly bigger than his right but I am positive he has been and currently is practicing a lot. I guess the only way your fingers can magically grow is if you practice a lot lol. Just try stretching exercises but not til the point that it hurts. It's kinda like adapting to your needs isn't it?

Yes, imagine you have long fingers then go with it and Jam OUT! You'll be fine, plenty of people have short fingers and are talented with those instruments. It's all about the individual, and your short fingers are a component of you...which makes you an individual that can jam to any tune if you put your mind to it.

Work with the fingers that you have. You don't want to risk injuring your fingers with any unapproved methods of elongating your fingers.
