the absolute best set of cranks for a mountain bike is the 2007 Shimano XTR, but the msrp is over $500. if your a new rider, i suggest you get something like a Deore level, which would cost around $65, unless you have a lot of money to waste.

Seriously, there is not a better crank on the market than anything that RaceFace makes. Theyr'e not the lightest but who cares! They are bomb proof, and there isnt a company that will back their product so readily as RaceFace. I once sheared off one of my chainring bolts. Totally my fault... I called them up and explained what happened, and asked if they could repair my crank arm at my expense. Their response was something like..."No, but we will sell you a new set of cranks and a new freeride bb for $50." Try to get that kind of service from Shimano. Hell try to get anyone on the phone from there. For me and most of my friends, it is and always will be RACE FACE!!!

Shimano Saint Crankset Triple 175mm 22/32/44 1114 g. only----you can get it for $ 175 at Jenson USA (www.jensonusa.com ) or if you REALLY want a bargain get the FSA pro chainrings w/ the same dimensions for $69.98 at Blue Sky Cycling (www.blueskycycling.com).
