Do you retain your memories and being or do you just shut off like a TV? Do you go to a generic afterlife, like the suburbs? I'm being light hearted but it is a serious question. I have all kinds of theories.
RELIGIOUS FOLK- I respect your beliefs but i pretty much know what you believe.

Myprushus- Why would all aetheists believe the same thing? I don't believe you just stop. Energy cannot be created or destroyed it simply changes state.

Isn't it amazing how many Christians can't read.

I believe in reincarnation and that my soul is immortal. As in this life I don't have recall to past lives, I understand that will be the same in my next. However, I believe that certain knowledge is retained, particularly that pertaining to spiritual awareness. the purpose of this life is to develop my spiritual understanding so that ultimately my soul-mind ascends to a new level. I believe that in human form, when my soul-mind has gained certain knowledge I will have recall to certain past-life experiences and this will indicate an advanced soul, one that is perhaps nearing its readiness for a next level of awareness in the next life. Sounds weird but I have done a lot of reading and research and even if I'm wrong, will it is certainly making this life interesting! I also believe in karma, what you do comes back on you threefold and that also influences the next life incarnation.
Kind of like, the way I live my life now, my attitudes and the knowledge I gain enables my next incarnation to readily acquire this knowledge and then develop even more beyond it.
At the moment of death, I believe my soul goes to another etheric plain where it is aware of all its past lives and it then chooses when to re-enter the world in human form. To ascend to other levels, my soul needs to achieve certain things in human form and so staying on this other etheric place is in limbo.

I gotta say that if we, as atheists, believe that there is no afterlife and such, why do so many of us feel the need to bash those that choose to think differently? Personally, I'm not sure what to believe...energy's gotta go somewhere and there's something to the soul thing, but if that's the end and there's nothing left, but a cold corpse, memories and personal effects then why do we care what everyone else thinks. I guess what I'm saying is, I hate it when I'm flagged as hostile simply because other athiests attack the religious nuts.

the brain ceases and so does everything but the long process of rot and decay tha't why i'll go with cremation . quick and easy nothing left but ashes . Now I ask you does anyone really believe yooou will continue to exist in a pile of ashes when you had trouble enough with a working brain .there is no basis for after life
what receptical why function when do we die where would our new body come from . fantasize till your heart content but no-one has ever returned for good reason!

Yes, life just shuts off like a TV or a light bulb. You are very right that energy cannot be destroyed or created. Do you know fossil fuels? They are made of dead organisms over millions of years. That is if you get buried. So, you will be a fossil fuel after millions of rotting after death. If you are cremated, then, you were fuel yourself! You burnt. Your energy changed into light and heat energy.

When someone dies, life goes on as usual for everyone else. For that person, it's over and nothing happens to them as they no longer exist. Their bodies are empty shells that are disposed of. The 'content' in terms of memory, personality, etc no longer exist except in other peoples' memories.
To give you a simplistic (and admittedly poor) analogy - a computer's RAM chip holds data while it is powered. When the power goes, so does the information.

I personally believe, that like falling to sleep, I wont know what hit me (if I were fortunate to have a peaceful death) and I would simply turn off like a tv, as you put it.
Traditionally, I would be cremated, but if we were to let nature take it's course, my body would be broken down by various nasties such as germs, fungi and worms, and I would decompose, eventually recycled into the Earth...

I don't know. Neither does anyone else, really...theist or atheist. There is no evidence for anything beyond death so all that we're left with is pure speculation. I'd like to think there's an afterlife, but I have no real reason to think there is one at all.

Q: Where will I go when I die?
A: In a box, set in a hole 6 feet deep, in close proximity to creatures that will eventually breech my coffin and devour my remains, all the while surrounded by other unfortunate people that suffered my condition; death. Oh you meant my soul, my bad. I'll just freegin blink out. That's it, all done.

It's like the TV Dude: you just cease to be. The only "Afterlife" is the memory of you and your deeds among the living.

I go for the TV analogy. Would I like to believe I live forever? Sure, who wouldn't? Does wanting to believe something that contradicts all available evidence make it true? No, it doesn't.
