don't take that story literally brother... we are not even sure if that story really happen, right? it can be true or it may also be not. but we what we holds on is the faith that these story really happen. i would suggest to read that story between each line and see what is the story telling us today. what was the sin really committed by the people that time and not take literally that there is really a tower built.

I think it was the intent behind the building of the Tower of Babel, not its actual construction. The intent of the people was to make a name for themselves, and also to not be scattered over the earth.
Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth. (Genesis 11:4).
Also, I think that God dislikes it when people presume to know his mind. People build a tower to prevent something that probably wouldn't have happened if they hadn't built the tower...ironic huh.
Then there's
The LORD said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other." (Genesis 11:6,7)
Maybe people were getting too full of themselves...even today effective communication can determine an endeavors chance for success. By limiting communication abilities God keeps humans in check.
(Or maybe this is the bible's way of explaining why there are so many different languages. And why communication is so difficult even among people speaking the same language.)

Obviously it has nothing to do with the height of the building! Let's give the folks of old some credit. Do you really think they were going to build a physical monument that reaches the skies? One that matches Japan's Mt Fuji or even Mt Everest? Certainly not! It was simply their way of saying to build a tall monument, a focal point whereby all can see and remain together in one place. Their reason? So that they will not be scattered upon the face of the earth. Why did they give this reason? Simply because God did told Noah and his children to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth! God wanted the human population to spread out and fill the earth with life. This is how God wanted things to be after the flood, for people to multiply and so filled the earth. But once again we see that man attempted to sideline God's commands, and disregard God's Word. The ironical thing is that God became the one who scattered them, not by physically redistributing them, but by adding languages to them so that they no longer could understand each other and so abandoned the work. They probably searched out pockets of people who could speak the same languages and then make themselves scarced by moving away. Thus God's purposes are accomplished, even inspite of man's rebellion. This also explains the origins of languages, something that evolutionists today still cannot fathom. When people disregard God's Word, they become fools unto themselves.

God's Idea in Genesis 9:1 was that should mankind increase in number, scatter and fill the earth. However in Genesis 11:4, the people gathered together and decided to build a city with a tower so that they may not be scattered over the face of the whole earth. So because mankind opposed God's plan of filling the earth, God came down and caused them to scatter. So God did not really punish mankind but, he caused some confusion in their language to cause them to scatter across the earth.

God didn't punish the people because they built a tall tower. He punished them because they were working together and cooperating:
"But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building. The LORD said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other."
Go figure!

It's a myth the Hebrews used to explain why different peoples of the world had different languages. Like the tall tales about how pigs got curly tails or how giraffes got long necks. It's a "just so" story.

Actually it had nothing to do with punishing for the height, but for the arrogence of trying to specifically build a tower to heaven In otherwords, it was not the act, but the reason behind it.

1) He didn't punish anyone.
2) The problem was that the ancient Sumerians were trying to rebuild the civilization that was devestated by the Flood.
The story in Genesis parallels the historical account. Sumerian civilization was hit by a flood. As they tried to rebuild, mass immigrations of Babylonians, Akkadians, Hurians, Ugartics, etc. halted progress by confusing the languages.
