do you believe in chemical imbalance?
i personally think that there is alot of people.. who might have brain damage..but psychiatry misdiagnosed them for schizophrenia etc...
even if the brain scan is normal.. but brain imaging does not rule out brain injury. i have heard of widespread brain damage mri/ct scan are not able to detect.
mri and ct scan only scan brain structure.
i think the goverment invest more money for new and better brain imaging technologies.

of course I believe in chemical imbalance. Every time I get high or eat food, the chemicals are no longer balanced in my brain/body.

on the MRI scan, you can see where parts of my brain are constatntly working that are not supposed to be - this is diagnosed as OCD - they play with the chemicals in me and it reduces the amount of 'extra' activity - how can that not be a chemical imbalance??

if the goverment had its way then there would be no mental health, cause it is all in your head, and they believe that it is a waste of time and money, that is why the states have to pay the places that you get any treatment from for any mental health issue, cause the goverment would reither just say it does not excest. Then you think that they will foot the bill to have a better mri, or ct scan machine build to find out if you have had brain injuries, come on. Psychiatry, is a very new thing, and it is still not looked upon by most as the same as getting treatment for cancer, or any illiness, but that is what it is, an illiness. But the human mine is not known that well, there is so much more that they need to learn, it is suppose to be one of the newest of all for studying and understanding. So I believe that psychiatry does what it can with what it knows, and they keep pushing forward in hope to learn more, and to be able to help more and more people get well, i don't know any medical field that can be right on the mark when it comes to diagnoseing people. Cause there is so much to learn yet, even though they have come this far, it seems that ever year there are more and more illiness, that we do not have a cure for, and look at the list that they are still trying to find a cure for. Yes i do believe that some people have chemical imbalance, and that causes some of there problems, and can be treated with medication, but not all. Yes some people have been beaten or hit in the head so much, that they do not appear normal, or sound normal, but they are, and others treat them like they don't know a thing, when they could be the smartest person that you have ever meant. So don't just ask about psychiatry, and the technologies that we have out there, more money is spend on war, then on anything else. To keep our country free, and if the presdent had his way there would be no place to receive mental treatment, cause he put out an email on mental illiness, and he does not believe in it, or that it excuss. So feel lucky that they can even treat people or see people. As for the imaging technologies that is used in all parts of medical research, and well, again, they need the money to move forward, and if they are not on the top of the list then they are going to have to find it somewhere else, or wait. So you are lucky that the medical field has gotten this far, with out being shut down. cause some think that you do not need any kind of medical treatment for anything, just go back to the good ole cave man days.

Medication can help but whether it is chemical imbalance or not is another thing. I think you are right and more research should be done. I do believe that physical illness can affect one and cause depression as well as any kind of stress. I think they need to be more careful with their diagnosis since it is hard for the patient to know what is wrong. I don't think that thinking only about a possible chemical imbalance is the right thing for everyone. Medicine can help but it sure is hard to find the right thing to help you and when you do they sometimes want you to take something that does not work. What i take now works so i hope to stay on it if not then i will treat myself with herbs.

It is as much art as science. When it comes to the chemical imbalance I see it as a myth. Diabetes is a chemical imbalance. No test has ever shown that mentally ill individuals have any kind of imbalances. Makes for alot of pharmaceutical industry profits though.

It is very easy to say that a chemical imbalance is shown on PET scans and other imaging tests, but you have to back that up with other evidence. If serotonin levels are out of flux individuals with depression and other illnesses how do you quantify it. Of course your body chemistry changes when external factors come into play, but the theory of chemical imbalance is based on internal biological factors. I come from a family of doctors and nurses and have been treated everywhere from Mt. Sinai to the Mayo clinic. I have had 12 treating psychiatrists and at least 25 consulting ones. 2 or 3 of them adhere to the theory. Simply put if doctors, especially psychiatrists couldn't prescribe drugs, they would be out of business.

hullo
psychiatry is a branch of general medicine,it cares for patients with mental disorders, its services in any society reflects the degree of maturity of its people.
we psychiatrist do not depend largely on imaging techniques as a tool in the diagnosis of mental disorders, furthermore schizophrenia is a solid disease, not an invention of doctors mind ,try not to adopt the anti psychiatry movement ideas.
