I have a son with Autism. I never thought I wanted to have more kids because of the chance of them also having Autism but I think I do want more. Is there anything I can do to prepare my body before and during pregnancy that anyone think could help??? (example. eat organic, detox, clay baths)

I've heard the risk MAY be higher for
having another child born with autism
once a previous child has it, but we have
a close family friend who has 3 children .....
her middle child (son - age 15) is autistic,
but her first child (daughter - age 17) and
her youngest child (son - age 12) are both
perfectly healthy ...... so if you have the desire
for more children, don't let your fears discourage you.

Here is a link for an excellent book that may be of interest to you.

Well, according to WebMD:

Although the cause of autism is not known, some cases are linked to chemical exposure during pregnancy. Don't take drugs during pregnancy unless your doctor says it's OK. This is particularly true for some seizure medications. And do not drink alcoholic beverages of any kind while you are pregnant.

Early diagnosis and treatment of PKU and celiac disease will reduce the risk of a child having autism. Being immunized against German measles (rubella) prior to pregnancy can prevent rubella-associated autism.

well, i used to work with autistic children and studied. i had once a student, he had 8 siblings, not all of them had autism, but i think like 5 had. and u know old times they considered it being a mother's fault - mothers who were cold to their babies, didn't hold them in hands and didn't breast feed them were supposed to be the cause of autism of their children. then someone desided that it may be not true. but in any case u can't eat right and u can't know whether your next kid will be autistic. the only positive thing i can say it is the level of autism differs very much. i had a student who looked and acted almost normal, he just was more private than normal kids, talked less and didn't smile at all. but he talked normally and if u didn't know he was diagnosed with autism u would say he is just quiet kid who likes privacy. so with loving tender care from the very first days of a baby is born u might at least imrpove his level of autism - he won't be that different from average kids

i found the following information oat this address: http://www.adhd.com.au/Autism.htm

There is emerging evidence that a dysfunctional methylation system may result in abnormal genetic expression leading to dysfunctional cells. Vit. B12, folate, B6 and Magnesium play a central role in regulating Methylation.

Research over the last 20 years has suggested a relationship between maternal diet and the birth of an affected infant, and recent evidence has confirmed that folic acid, a water soluble vitamin, found in many fruits (particularly oranges, berries and bananas), leafy green vegetables, cereals and legumes, may prevent the majority of neural tube defects.

* Women who have one infant with a neural tube defect have a significantly increased risk of recurrence (40-50 per thousand compared with 2 per thousand for all births).
* A randomised controlled trial conducted by the Medical Research Council of the United Kingdom demonstrated a 72% reduction in risk of recurrence by periconceptional (i.e. before and after conception) folic acid supplementation (4mg daily).
* Other epidemiological research, including work done in Australia, suggests that primary occurrences of neural tube defects may also be prevented by folic acid either as a supplement or in the diet.
* This has been confirmed in a randomised controlled trial from Hungary, which found that a multivitamin supplement containing 800mcg folic acid was effective in reducing the occurrence of neural tube defects in first births.
Extract from NHMRC Publication

Whilst 800 mcg of folic acid may prevent neural tube defects and Down Syndrome in Northern Europe where the Ultra violet (UV) radiation is low. In Australia, and other high UV countries this may not be adequate to protect against Neurodevelopmental disorders. There is evidence to suggest that white skinned people are more prone to folic acid being destroyed in subcutaneous tissues by UV. That's one reason why indigenous people in high UV regions of the world are dark skinned, as the melanin pigment effectively filters UV and affords protection against folic acid being destroyed.

Normal brain development and function depend on the active transport of folate across the blood-brain barrier. A study reported on the clinical and metabolic findings among five children with normal Neurodevelopmental progress during the first four to six months followed by the acquisition of marked irritability, decelerating head growth, psychomotor retardation, cerebellar ataxia, dyskinesias, pyramidal signs in the lower limbs and occasional seizures. After the age of six years the two oldest patients also manifested a central visual disorder. Known disorders had been ruled out by extensive investigations. Despite normal folate levels in serum and red blood cells with normal homocysteine, analysis of Cerebro Spinal Fluid suggested disturbed transport of folates across the blood-brain barrier.
Oral treatment with folinic acid resulted in clinical improvements.
