a sensible question - but one very wrong assumption - that creationists believe in just the point that you are countering..
that's not the only point - and that the earth is 6K years old is also not part of the principle / theory
There can be a lot of such "grafting" that can take place - but what point does that prove / disprove? Does that make a God of man? Does it give him the power to create something out of nothing?
The point is: does evolution explain everything? Does it explain the creation of the universe? dfoes it explain how everything in this universe including the movement of the planets, the tilt of the earth, the seasons, the human body, and millions of such examples can be quoted, works with such clockwork precision?
So countering one point does not necessarily prove that the opposite is true!

A better question is why are the rather substantial, scientifically valid observations that support an earth that's closer to 10,000 years old glossed over or ignored by the scientific community? I don't go around insisting the earth is young. I simply point out two major facts: Evolution is a theory, and everything else in the Bible has been proven true (except for the future prophecies). Moreover, it should be noted there are many reasons to take the Genesis account literally. For one, every time in the Old Testament, the same Hebrew word for "day" when associated with a number, refers to a literal 24 hour period. For two, there is no recorded history of any civilization living beyond about 10,000 years ago. I will also add that my experience is such that every person that professes Christ as Lord and Savior, that also believes in old earth creationism, or evolution, is either a new believer, or, when interrogated about his faith, is found not to have been saved.

Umm...ok. So if they don't buy the big bang theory or evolution, why would they believe you about this dog thing? It actually never says how long the earth was created before Adam & Eve were here so it's totally possible that there were different breeds of animals, etc. The dinosaurs aren't mentioned in the bible but we know they were here. I think there was a very different earth before God started this little human project. That seems plausible actually.

There are two flavors of creationists: old world creationists, who will concede that the earth is a lot older than 6000 years (but still rely on supernatural intervention to explain present conditions), and new world creationists, who don't. Of course, the scientific evidence shows conclusively that neither position is tenable. The real problem with creationism is that it is an irrefutable theory. It is provable that the predictive power of any theory derives exclusively from its refutability, so creationist theories can make no predictions: they are useless, and hence a waste of time.

I can believe in Creation and some type of evolution, but not that the world completely evolved from a single accidental process without the help of a Master Designer, Engineer,Chemist, Scientist, Mathematician, Architect, and Artist named God. Sorry.

It's funny to me how people don't get the meaning of the word evolution. It means to become something greater than it previously was, with better ability to reproduce and survive. I, for instance, have evolved beyond Bushkind. Evolution happens slowly enough that the world-is-flat people can't wrap their brains around it. They would rather imagine a white guy with a big long white beard sitting at an engineers table intelligently designing them and only them. What about the fact that there is almost certainly life on some other planet somewhere?
PS The TRUE GOD set evolution in motion. God is that good.

I am not quite sure about the question, but I think you're on to something. If we could compare the genome of a wolf with that of a modern breed we'd surely see the minimum time required for selective breeding would exceed 6k years, proving yet again that the world did not come into existence in 4004 B.C.

sirus: I am a Christian and do not believe the earth is less than 10,000 yrs. old. I believe the earth is part of the universe which is millions of years old and can be supported by the fossil record. Equally, the fossil record offers very adequate supportive evidence for a Creator, also ! See: Center for Science and Culture re: www.dissentfromdarwin.org This site contains a listing of very prominent Scientists, who reject the evolutionary theory, which we are taught to esteem as our "father" of the earth's progeny !

Have you thought that a day to God is much different to God, and that a calculation of Creation's age is impossible using either the Bible or Science. If I said the Creation was a trillion years old, could you refute it? 6000 Years may be what some man says, God never does say. I trust him to keep his secrets.
When you deal with huge numbers, and estimate, you will always be wrong. This is just common sense.

I am a Christian and I believe in the theory of creation as what is stated in the bible (Genesis).
Let me ask you first,. do you believe in God and the bible? If not you may not believe in my answers.
We believe that God has created the earth including the whole universe whithin 6 days(1 day of God is 1000 years to human, this is stated in the holy scripture I just forgot what verse it is.) and rested on the 7th day. If you want a clarification on the creation I would recommend you to read it.
Everything made by God is a miracle........and a miracle is not supported by scientific basis.
