well these are basically theories although im married and have been twice but,if you are truly interested in and he is too i can offer what i think.Be honest no matter how trivial you might think something is ,that way there will be no trust issues between you ,leave the past where it is dont ever bring it up no matter what.. everyone has one, also treat each other with respect and love and dignity and do for the other when one isnt doing his 50 percent and say is doing 20 then you make up the diffrence and do 70 percent and him visa versa, never say things in anger nor go to bed angry ..it makes for stress and resentment.. try never to say unkind things to each other and number one without fail.. talk dont ever stop talking to each other not fight im saying talk it out no matter what without anger.. if you stop talking you are losing the whole relationship..If you have a problem and something is bothering you or him always be honest ,and tell each other commit to talking and never in anger.. talk it out so hope this helps i know when i have stuck to this in my marriage and she has we have always had a good relationship but when there are things that go against the things i have mentioned here then you are asking for trouble .Im sure there are things i have forgotten here to tell you but these are the most important i can think of..

By realizing that a realtionship worth keeping isn't one where each gives 50-50. That means you are only giving half of your best. A relationship worth keeping demands 100-100.

Commit!! Dont cheat, ever! Love your partner, try to understand his point of view. Put his feelings before your own.My pastor said once about relationships "If you treat him like a king, he will treat you like a queen!" and vice versa of course!! :-) Its all about commitment, respect for each other and listening and understanding each other.
